Ok, ok, this isn't so much having to do with actual 3d but it kinda is so... Well, you'll see. This day 3 of learning Adobe After Effects. I'm the one in the white shirt and gatorade hat. (green lightsaber) and the one with the weird hair is my brother. (blue lightsaber). And then my neighbor as well. (red lightsaber)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqhTTFj6NRo

Basically I had to paint over 2700 frames for each lightsaber. Then do kind of the same by adding a black transparency map over where it disappears behind the body. I was able to just keyframe some of it but a lot was just frame by frame work. This is literally over 12 hours of work Not bad for my first try I reckon but what do you guys think?

The saber's where a little bright, but it was quite good. I see Dark Tanner had a low budget saber that doubled as a brush

WOW! I always wanted a brushsaber, but seriously, good effects; how the hell could you be arsed to paint over 2700 frames.

Check out my site for the latest on my games.

I don't exactly know what that means But if your asking like how did I have the patience or something then here's the answer I'm a pretty patient guy. I just throw on my headphones, listen to some music, and do it. Granted, there were some points where I could simply keyframe it, but most of the time, it was just 'drag the four corners onto the markers I made and move on to the nest frame. This pretty much filled up time I'd normally just spend watching tv or something

arsed=bothered

Nice work, I'd like to have seen some particle sparks though, but maybe save that for next time, like make one at night so you can add more glowy stuff.

There's a good video of yoda singing britney spears on youtube, you should check that as it's very well done (and cheap!) might give you some ideas...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCdW9ygbRQU... that vid just cracks me up, if I ever go to another fancy dress party I'm definately doing that!.

Played a bit with rotoscoping a while ago. Everyone does lightsabers, of course Also had a bit of fun with blaster bolts too - they're easier, as you only need to show them moving for 2-3 frames or so. Getting the flares and sparks when you hit things is important too. I also found that (for purely personal tests, of course) Jedi Knight II is an excellent source of sound effects.

If you painted a stick bright pink with white tips at the base of the blade and the top and shot it on a uniform coloured background you could avoid multiple frame edits.
the white points are registry points for the software to match the blurred line to the stick.

good work tho, all good things take ten billion times the amount it takes to show them

Hey thanks for the comments guys. Andrew, google adobe after effects and go to their website. They've got a 30 day trial version.

Well, I don't know what kind of features gimp has, but if you converted every frame to bmp or something and then put it all back together you're crazy. Crazier than me. And I'm the crazy . After Effects has some nifty features where I can click one button to go to the next frame. Then I have the animated core, and the three glow passes and then screen it all over the original. I feel sorry for you if you had to go through what I think you did

Oh and I'm not calling you stupid or anything for doing that. I also once attempted that with photoshop. Didn't get far...

And i'm the crazy ninja!!

in a short class i took at our school we made a short video where we had a little green fireball effect which we did the old convert to bitmap and draw it on. In the end it looked ok but not top notch. The video was great and looked pretty nice though. Good Job!

@the crazy IT was actually relatively simple!(but long at that) the gimp has the ability to extract video frames edit them and make the movie again. You can also go fro frame to frame and preview the movie. put together with the lightsaber plugin I got a pretty nice effect. i have to find that video.

@The Crazy - Thanks. I'll try the free version. I too have been down the road of converting each frame to bitmap manually, editing and then putting them back into an animation. This should make it much easier!
