Just a question, are you using maya for gamedev, or special effects?
Cos I tried the trial and it really dosent seem the type of app for gamedev modelling etc.

Dont worry, Indi has a little more on his agenda than some game modelling

like what indi?

If you don't need maya for the special features then why are you shelling out dough for it?

I'd say unless your planning on mass producing some low to medium poly models or have some very serious rendering that can't be done by blender or yafray then alright but I seriously doubt that.

I've never even seen a 3d model from you O_o

Indi, I'm sort of agreeing with Oddmind, are you doing something rather major for the works of Maya, cheaper apps like Softimage XSI (My next buy) use the exact same renderer (Mental Ray) and pretty much carry the same features, I don't know if XSI has camera tracking, but it has facial animation (Seperate package) fluids, biped animations (And the standard IK), cloth, hair (more expensive version) And the interface is relatively easy to get started with (Although there are bits I am still working out in the demo) Plus it is great for games (titles such as Hitman and MGS) and CGI, I'd look at it first, and compare the three versions fully, then those to Maya.

I'm sure you've made the wise decision for your needs, but I would always make sure you've covered the alternatives, simply because you can later go 'bollocks there was a cheaper option to do exactly what I wanna do'.

I have already purchased the video editing component, as well as shake, this next step adds to the whole process as a whole.

The killer is :
my video editing software is native to the maya format.
This means all the z dimension work I perform in 3d can be translated with video content.

I am starting to move to the last component of my business model which is high end special effects and television content.

I already have my modelling software for indi game developing but I read that maya can export to x if required, another branch back to game dev. If it helps I use milkshape and unwrap 3d plus photoshop, and characterfx sometimes. I have also recently purchased hexagon purely for the modelling joy.

I dont really want to fork out the extra $1800 for the contextual support as i can hound the web for problems regarding the software.
I will get free upgrades for a period of time if I do take the contextual help package.

Id prefer to buy maya as its all a tax deduction and usually I triple my spenditure with anything I buy for the company.
The best result was $35US for milkshape turned around into a $700 job for a 3d model of ned kellys armour for a television documentary here in OZ.
The 2nd and third would be photoshop and Macromedia MX packages pulling most of the weight of my business capital.

I might ask this question on another forum, I think the price of it is too high for the indi scene and I would like to find the best price.

I could use maya in conjunction with print web video 3d dvd and spfx.

It spits out swf which would be a blessing for 3d related sites and multimedia projects lower then higher end effects projects.

Im killing many birds with one stone by taking this approach.

I cant afford maya unlimited [yet] which is the price of deposit for another house.

I already have povray and blender equiped machines and from comparing both packages to maya there are aspects which dont even come close.
there is a method to my madness however im not always clear on why i take certain approaches.

Yeah if the viewer has a super fast connection. The swf files I export from maya take forever to load in people's browsers.

Last time I bought Maya itself was a good 5years back, god knows if I could remember the retailers name now.

Found it was cheaper purchasing the Platinum Subscription, to Alias' online service for £3,000. Allowed me to download all of their products for free and a valid 1year key was e-mailed to me.

Downside is, you need to reinstall you have to basically download again as it'll claim the key is already in use. That and you need a fairly quick connection. Can't upgrade to Maya 8 without spending more now despite my license still being valid for the next 2months. Damn annoyance that Discreet got rid of some of the better aspects of Alias Online.

Still they provide a demo CD (atleast to the US and UK) which is trial for 30days, and after that you can purchase an *upgrade license for £950. It doesn't bother even checking your HDD or ask you for a previous CD to upgrade just checks your details online if you were a previous customer.. so I'll probably end up going for that. The books and training CDs are good if you're a beginner but tbh Maya is so simple to use anyway most of the time it's just expensive fluff.

Still does make up for the close to useless manual. ^_^

The platinum service is a joke for the price.

most of those dvds i got for free that are supposed to be bleeding edge from the image above go way back to maya 5.
hardly the most up to date techniques for the package i bought.

I already have a mobile phone tv commercial the 2nd day i got the package so it will pay for itself 5 times over.

woot! password is here!!!
