How's everyone's programming experience? Anyone got any games or demos that are ready for the community? I noticed DB seems to have a place for all of those wonderfully made games people make, but DBP doesn't quite yet. I'd host one, but my current site doesn't have enough memory and if I were to pay for a site, I'd have to get an income from that site to support it (maybe ads?). It would be REALLY NICE if the DARK BASIC PRO people would GIVE US A SPOT TO PUT OUR GAMES ON . I know it will be coming soon though, but I am getting close to where I may have a demo and I want to through it up somewhere where people can play it! How do you all feel about this Game Gallery Idea?

isnt that for both, after all db is dbpro's predecessor, dont wanna separate the community too much.

The fact that DBPRO is different from DB classic does split the community in a way.

yeah perhaps they are different... but enhanced is very different in how you go about things to standard yet everyone still calls Standard or Enhanced, 'Classic'

the Gallery isn't just for DarkBasic Standard/Enhanced projects but DarkBasic Professional Projects as well. There are just non complete yet. However within the next week i wouldn't doubt a flurry of them being posted up

But, what might be the problem is that people don't go to www.darkbasic.com anymore, but just go to www.darkbasicpro.com. I mean, after all, this forum is hosted at Pro, isn't it? Perhaps if there was just a single combined gallery, as there is now, but it could be seen on both sites. That would give the best coverage for both groups of users.

Anyway, as for my game, a strategy game called eMalice, don't expect it for a while! A friend is going to help with a website soon, but only once I've finished the GUI. On the other hand, I plan to release a demo of the map editor within a month or so, so keep your eyes peeled!

What about you Wendigo? Do you have any games in the works?

If you check the Program Announcements board you can find some links to quite a few finished or in-progress games, most of the written in pro (My retro-comp entry "Overdroid" for example ). It would be nice if there is a mutual showcase to at least have the option to sort them via version.

Yep I'd like to see a more DBP specific gallery - perhaps with an area for comments or votes or something and a way to upload your screenshot with a URL. And a random selection and sorting.

I've thought about doing this myself but don't have the time to look into how to do all the things I'd want in it. That said I can sort out hosting if someone else wants to do it. I'm thinking www.DBGALLERY.com or something.

As for my game, theres some screens in the program annoucements board.

Indeed I most assuredely have a game in the progress! I've gotten really into tactical games lately (it's just really fun to me to be able to ambush baddies when they least expect it i guess). Right now I have been working on a terrain editor, but do have the basis for a game going. EVEN WITH NIFTY TROOPERS! The troops are really stupid right now and have a tendency to get stuck in walls, but that's what I'm working on now! .

Oh yeah, I agree with the mutual show case majigger.

oh and one more thing: PEOPLE, PLEASE USE THE BETA FORUM FOR BETAS AND THE PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR FINISHED PRODUCTS PLEASE! Alphas should also go under Betas too, but really, that's what they are for!

...got that out of my system

I got about half-way into my terrain/level editor, then decided to scrap the lot and start again in DBPro. Not only because it was going so slow in DBClassic, but also because I've come up with a more flexible way of laying out the levels.

What's yours going to be like? I'm going for the overhead turn-based affair, with a squad of up to twelve troops at your command. I haven't even started on AI, so there's no wall-trooper problems yet! Actually, I'll consider myself lucky if they even manage to move towards the wall in the first place!

Hehe, cool! I haven't played a turn-based game in a while. Mine is actually going to be a real-time team tactical/strategy. I say that cuz I have all these great ideas for it and am not quite sure which ones are going into the batter. I seriously need to upload some screenshots. Right now, I got a desert landscape with a few Joshua Trees, the good 'ol high-priced-out-in-the-desert gas station a diner, and a few abandoned buildings. I got some troops like I said and I figured out how to make that really tall high grass that you can hide in in games like Soldier-of-Fortune and (the later) Delta-Forces. I say the later because the 1st two use voxel engines explicitely for land and their tall grass was done with "voxel noise." I use billboards. The main goal of the game is that you will be able to control a squad of troops or armored/air units. Rank will place you in different positions, ie. You might start at private and private-sgt. you will be commanded, leutenant-captain you will lead and Major-Colonal you will be able to command everything and everyone via satelite relay while you sit comfortably back at base, of course, one botched mission and you may be fighting again . I'm not completely sure if my game will start in the near future, present, or near past, but I would say that there would be about 10-20 year either way in which it will take place. I plan on also incorporating the Army Rangers, Delta-Force, 10th Mountain division, 160th Airborne and because I owe a lot to the DB team who happens to mostely be british (I'm guessing) SAS, and the RAF. Which divisions of the RAF I do not know yet. I hope to have at the very least, desert fighting and arctic fighting. Might fight Russian Terrorists or something. Heck lets make it really interesting: American and British terrorists! Restore peace to our own countries! That would be cool!

So you'll have a Battlezone-esque thing going on? Where you're in charge of a load of guys and guns as well as being on the front lines? That sounds pretty cool - I was really taken by the way Battlezone merged my favourite two genres: FPS and RTS!

The best way to describe mine is a fusion between X-Com and Starcraft - it's got the same basic gameplay of X-Com, but I'm paying particular attention to the strengths and weaknesses of weapons as well. Rather than have a "my gun's bigger that yours" situation, each gun has scenarios that it will excel in, but others that it will be completely useless in. A good example are the electron guns: they have 100% accuracy, but are pretty short range, back-fire in a damp atmosphere (set off the sprinkler systems!) and the right armour will absorb all damage from it. At the moment I only have plans for urban environments, as that's what my level builder is probably going to be best at.

Of course, there are other things I'm going to add so it isn't just another X-Com clone: cybernetic implants, combat drugs, devices and, more importantly, multiplayer! The hard thing is making squad-progression work in a multiplayer game, but I've got a few ideas to help it along...

Anybody else making an RTS game? I'd like to hear what sort of thing you're working on!

You got it! Battlezone like! Though in this one, you may not be able to actually build troops and units (in game mode). I guess you could say it's tactical cuz you have to command what you got at the moment. I do have another game on the backburner (that I started before this one) that is much more like battlezone though, with a feeling of Uprising to it (ie will support Air units and units wont be "built" but dropshipped in). Come to think of it. I got 3 games going, cuz my other is kinda like Earth & Beyone minus the "Pay-to-Play" (feature?). Your game sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. I wouldn't doubt that after it is finished me and 2 of my friends will be playing it alot. Good luck on it!

Oh, three games? I could never take on three at a time - I'm busy enough with one! Originally, though, it was supposed to just be a couple of months of me exprimenting with strategy and email-based gaming. Although, I never seem to be able to program anything without trying to make it look and play as well as possible. Bit of a bugger when you just think you're going to knock something up quickly!

I've never played Uprising, but one thing that annoyed me about Battlezone was that it wasn't tactical enough; I usually just re-equipped my tank with bigger guns, grabbed a couple of wingmen and then went all Quake-Man(tm) style. Such a missed opportunity... Although, if you're not in a fast, super-armoured tank and you can't just throw out more units, like in your game, it should be much better! Just make sure you've got good control of troops over long distances, though, otherwise it'll loose a lot of the strategy element.

Syndicate Wars is a pretty big inspiration for my game, since I loved the atmosphere created by the futuristic cities and the endless rain. I'd like to be able to recreate that, but I can't seem to get the lighting right. I'll keep at it and see what can be done, I think.

Admiral, I'd love to discuss your game with you - everybody seems to be trying to make RPG games at the moment and I'm always keen to here what fellow programmers are up to! I would have emailed you about becoming a tester, but I couldn't find your email address anywhere!

LOL @ Russian Terrorists
In case you didn't notice those poor bastards are SELLING their guns to anyone who'll have them just so they can buy stale bread and second hand shoes. Any Russian who gets a gun will either sell it or join the Mafia.

As for real tactics where you can't churn out more units to replace the ones you lost in your 3-man "tank rush" you might want to go play Ground Control. That was a wicked game. No resources except possibly for the experience your troops got from fighting. Before a mission you'd have 1, 2 or 3 drop ships which held 4 units each. A unit could be 10 men, 5 scout tanks, 3 figher planes, 2 artillery tanks or whatever. THAT was tactics. Using the same force to cope with a variety of situations. Respect to anyone who can capture that quality of gameplay.

Ok my email is [email protected] or you can contact me at [email protected] but im not sure if that is fully operational yet. Ive been studying alot of other games like mine out in the market to see the good and the bad points and make something decent from the info I got so strategic and tactics play a large part of gameplay and also for the ai.
