OKAY, first thing you have to do it select your model, with the object select. Then you right click, and mouse-over UV something or another, and choose direct. The next step is really learn-as-you-go, but after you figure it out, and have your image, you'll want to go to the outliner window, and right click the UV Map and choose "Make External". Take your pick of an image editor, edit the image you externalized, and when finished, save the image, go back into W3D, and right click the UV Map again in the outliner window, this time choose "Refresh".

Thats pretty much it, all off of memory.

Problems? Yes I used to have those...until I went insane.

My specialty is writing simple modeling tutorials, and I guess a UV Map tutorial could fall under there. If my website were still up, I'd send you a linky to my sword tutorial, but I ripped it off the web because I wasn't doing anything with it for like 5 months straight, so I'm currently working on it once I fix my computer.

[EDIT]Oh wait, it's still up under my old host...so check it out here:

[EDIT2] Pardon the Dark, annoying colors, it's really old But do check out the sword tutorial if you're interested in that sorta stuff.[/EDIT2]

No really, my comp isn't working. I need to fix more specifically my AGP440.sys file, but according to everyone I've asked I need a Windows XP Pro disk to do that, and my brother didn't send one with the computer. If you need further proof, I removed my website from the internet because I can't update it like I was planning to. http://3dunited.150m.com

[EDIT] Actually, what I'll do is put W3D back on the computer I normally use just for the internet, and I'll just throw together some screenshots... I did this a while back, will see if I might have the one screenshot that's most important

I don't use either of those. I use nothing but W3D and I was using Hexagon 2 until my comp started messin up.

[EDIT]
I made the tutorial using Microsoft Word, had a .rar file that had some extras, and when I tried to post here, my comp messed. I will upload it some time tommorow

I found it a little tricky at first, but with the right tools and techniques it's a snap. Here's how I'd texture map a cylinder with my current workflow.

First, in Wings, I'd select the end faces of the cylinder, switch to vertex mode and select edges=hard. Now select any one edge running the length of the cylinder and make it hard also. Wings uses hard edges as "cuts" in the unwrapping, and can't unwrap an uncut model. So, now you can go to the UV tool and you want to just find the option to continue unfolding. This should give you your two endcaps and a long strip of polys which make up the cylinder's sides. The cool thing is that now you can select these and move them until you have them where you want. (Also, when a model has repeating features, such as the endcaps of the cylinder, you can overlay them so that they use the same parts of the texture) At this point I save the model.

Next I load the model into the free version of UVMapper and generate a template here. Save the template and you can paint on it with the paint tool of your choice. I use Ultimate Paint and Satori Photo XL.

http://www.uvmapper.com/downloads.html

Sometimes I'll use Tatoo (or zBrush or whatever) to paint directly on the model. I usually only do this to make it easier to identify which parts of the model correspond to the map before painting it in a 2d program.

Another option I plan to explore involves Mapping Magician, also free. This allows you to scale and position your UV regions when working with an object that has overlapping UV spaces. This often happens when you make a complex object from smaller objects that had been mapped seperately, for example a figure whose head and body both take up the full UV space and require seperate texture maps. Now you can scale their UV regions down and this lets you create a new map spanning both objects.

http://www.royriggs.com/mapmagic.html

I know there is also a way to create a texture in Wings using your vertex colours, but I find that mixing colours and UV mapping in Wings is tricky so I use the above method. I'm not at my computer right now, so sorry if some of my menu commands are imprecise.
