So, I'm confused, can you actually use .skp SketchUp files directly as implied in the newsletter

http://www.thegamecreators.com/data/newsletter/newsletter_issue_42.html#3

or is it that you can use SketchUp then export your models to .3ds? 'Cause I love SketchUp, it's an awesome program considering the price - free.

I tried

load object "mymodel.skp", 1

and got a runtime error. Maybe I need a plugin?

Do a search for 'sketchup' and you will find all the info you need.

Basically the person adding the sketchup support to 6.2 got it wrong. The Free version of sketchup does not export any format that DBPro supports. The pro version does however export 3DS files that DBPro does support (sort of). Apparantly you have a time limit on using the pro version for free, so can model in free version as much as you want, then quickly open pro version, export 3ds, and close it.

Even better though, is someone is working on a plugin to import models exported from the free version.

@Railgun & Spooky

Yes, indeed, I am just finishing up a plug-in that will let you load SketchUp models from either the free or Pro versions. Be aware, however, that the plug-in does not load .SKP files - it loads the models either from the KMZ archive produced by Google SketchUp or from the OBJ file produced by SketchUp Pro. So there is an "export" step that you need to do in the middle. However, you can then load the exported model directly into DBPro and use the plug-in's 50+ commands to work with it.

Check out my posts in the WIP forum - as of this date they are on page 2. Send me a mail if you have more questions.

The plug-in is finished and is now available for sale. Check out the 'World Building' drop-down at the top of the DBPro web page and click on 'ConvSEO'.

As I noted before, the plug-in does not import .SKP files. It imports other formats that the Free and Commercial versions can export.
