I managed to open a milkshape model in DBPro:

1) Export using "DirectX (JT)..."
2) Unselect all the boxes apart from "Right handled", "Exclude options", "Loop animations", "Binary"
3) Select the Format as "DirectX skin and bones"

Hope that worked

If your object does not have animations I often find the older exporter (by matthew scott, not sure where I got it, might be on the web site) can be more reliable (it only exports DX7 though, I think).

Otherwise I generally keep fiddling with the JT exporter setting until I get something that works.
