So my multi-million dollar budget software production is nearing completion. I'm a greedy big time corporation so I want to ensure those nasty nasty people who copy games without paying for it can't do this for my game...how would I go about this with DB Pro applications?

Being serious, I'm not bothered about making something hack proof, just so that it won't be a piece of cake to copy and distribute.

The app I'm working on I'm considering distributing from www.swreg.com and they can work with you to provide paying customers with a registration code that unlocks the product. Question is, once it's been unlocked how do you stop someone from simply copying the location of the files and then oofering it for d/l on say Kazaa?

This is of course presuming someone downloads it and likes it enough to bother doing so!! And I don't want anyone replying saying "I wouldn't bother worrying about it cos you'll probably only ever sell 2 copies before you lose faith in game programming and become a monk".

well, there is one bit of software that stops people copying your CD's. I haven't figured out how to use it yet like but it's called TK or TZ Copy protection.

I'll reply once I've found out where to get it.

I'm planning on having a downloadable piece of software so CD protection is not an option in this case, but it'll be good to know this for the future

i think soyuz talks about registration keys ?

my idea, but i don't know if it works:

someone downloads your game, and installs it. when installing, it should collect some information, e.g. systemtime, and make a number of it. then the user must send this number to you, you calculate a registration number belonging to the usernumber and give it to the user.
now the user is a nasty nasty person. he saves the registrationnumber in a txt file and puts it on kazaa. another nasty nasty person downloads it, tries it and it fails, because he has not the same usernumber. i hope my thoughts are right.
it's not the ultimate hackerproof, but it makes the life of nasty nasty people a little more difficult.

well why don't you do what microsoft has done with XP.

Make them send the serial number through the internet to your website.
Then save it,(if it's correct) and if anyone else tries to use it it won't work.

And also like microsoft give them a certain amount of days to send it then delete or corrupt the file so they can't use it if it's not there in time.

you could do this by doing something like this:

firstly get the date

open to write 1,"something that people won't know what it is"+".chk"
write string 1,date$
close file 1

then do this:

make sure that the file is in the startup file in the startup file.

this wouldn't actually work but something like this

open to read 1,"something that people won't know what it is"+".chk"
read string 1,date$
close file 1

if date$ > date$+20

if serial#=0
delete file "multibillionsoftware"+".exe"
else
delete file "something that people won't know what it is"+".chk"
endif

endif

the only successfully registar key I have ever seen is use by blizzard on battle.net. You can get a copy of someelses key and it will install a game like diablo 2 for example and go can play at home with it, but the real fun of blizzard games are online on there free network and if someone else is using a key and you try to log in with it, it wont let you. But like I said this works well for them because people want to play online. another thing about theirs is you can use a key gen to random a code for you because each key is registard to bnet when blizzard creates it and none blizzard registared keys don't work on bnet. For single player games the is no good key system. on the net is keys/serials for every game you can buy. even shareware games. If your game is good enough to be noticed then your key is going to be out there. just look at serialz2000 they have thousands of key for games and apps, old and new, commerical and shareware.

Thats like the method WON uses... You can use any cd key generator to play the game, but when you try to play online you have to use a valid key.
