how would i go about making a tank leave tread marks on the terrain?

i just have no idea how to approach this..

make a textured plain that follows the tank around, this will giv the effect of it fading too, create a new plain when the tank angle changes.

i sort of understand what you mean, but the only thing with doing it that way is the marks wouldn't line up with the previous mark (well it would take alot of coding for it to, because when the tank turns, the marks are going to be at a different angle, and your going to end up with zig-zag marks...

one other thing though, how would you go about the 'life' of the tread marks, would you say every loop it goes slightly more transparent? or is there another way?

thanks the second example is awsome, now i just need to figure out how to apply that to multiple objects, and make the old track fade away
