Was looking around for some inexspensive 3D tools today and found Hexagon.http://www.daz3d.com/shop.php?op=catmain&cat=272

Looks like an awsome program. Does anyone have experience with this program? Can it export DirectX(.X)? Other opinions?

Thanks.

I've got it. It's a good program, but it just didn't work well on my computer and I wasn't good at first so I gave up Seppuku's pretty good with that program. I've seen him make some nice stuff from it. I hear it has good uv map tools... just my 2 cents.

Why thank you

I do use it as a primary modelling tool.

Hexagon is what you call a speed modeller if you will, it focuses itself on modelling and has tools to make good modelling done quick (good when you're experienced in modelling, the skill isn't automatic) It offers a range of good tools for modelling, my new character modelling tutorial I am working on is being done in Hexagon 2.

But it only offers modelling UVMapping and texturing, no animation, composistion or real rendering (it has an ambient occulsion renderer that isn't very good, as it is very limited) As for .x export, nope, I haven't come accross it. If you're willing to buy it, find a program you are will to work with, I think Milkshape if you just want to use it for games, but if you want to do render work, there are other apps you can use alongside (I use Cinema 4D CE 6 with my Hexagon)

As for UV Mapping, the tools are pretty good for that as The Crazy mentioned, but I still use lithunwrap as I prefer its auto UV as I'm a crap UV Mapper. Although I did UVMap a face in Hexagon, and it found to work quite well. The texturer, well I get much better results in photoshop.

Hexagon also comes with its own set of bugs, which don't get in my way, you may get a crash, a save error, or other errors, once you know what it don't like you doing you can easily avoid them, I think one is using symmetry with the displacement mapper. I myself have come a across very little problem's, but I've head people coming acrosso others. It is a pretty cool and capable tool, if you're willing to buy that type 3D modelling program, I'd take a look at Silo 2 and Zbrush/Zbrush 2 as well, if you are willing to spend more, personally I would be Zbrush, but the catch with that Zbrush works more like a paint program than a 3D program, so if you're new to it, you may find yourself getting confused outside of it.

However, I am happy that I did buy Hexagon and would recommend it, but supposedly Silo 2 will be better and cheaper (but no paint tools) so I'd look into it to see what you think.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

Anyway, I need a program for game modeling with DB Pro support. So since Hexagon doesn't export DirectX I don't think it will work. Hmmmmmm. I guessing Milkshape will be the best.

O well, I'll just keep looking. Thanks again.

You can always buy both. Hex exports to .obj format, and Milkshape can import .obj and export to directX.

You can get Hex cheaper at Daz unitl the end of October. If you subscribe to their Platinum program (30 bucks) all Daz original items are half price.

This would bring the price of Hex doen to $105, including the subscritption. Just remember to go into your account details and uncheck the monthly renewal for your Daz subscription, if you don't want to keep going with it.

I would advise that too, if you're gonna get milkshape because of the .x, may as well get Hexagon with it as you were willing to get it anyway, I mean I used Hexagon as a modeller and Cinema 4D for everything else, my production is more accurate, faster and better than before.

I have Hexagon and, although I haven't used it heavily, it has behaved pretty well since the 2.1 patch. Prior to that it was a bit flakier. The toolset is pretty complete.

And at $1.99 which was the introductory price it was an absolute steal.

I have vague plans for World Domination
