I'm going to buy a new LIGHT laptop to design games and some 3d modeling. The ones I'm most interested in have

integrated Intel® DVMT up to 224MB VRAM (Dual Frequency)video

My question is can I do 3d modeling test levels of games I design good enough without a Nvidia Video card laptop?

Be more specific on the specs man.

I wouldn't recommend a intel graphics card, but some of the new ones seem alright actually, ATI or nVidia, but as long as it can perform its fine. I mean the ones they have on the Mac are better than some slightly recent ATI/nVidia ones.

If you're going light.

1.3 - 2ghz
a recent 8x AGP or PCI Express graphics card, 128mb or larger, with good speed and shader capabilities

512mb ram (if you're doing only game modelling) 1gb ram (if you're going for a render, but for rendering I'd usually recommend 2gb or higher)

And you should be able to good levels, as long as the rest of your laptop is capable. Plus its down to you really. What's your price limit anyway, so we can have any idea of 'how light' you are going.

If it's in your price range, get the 12.1" Dell XPS M1210 It's what I have and use for everything. I can play all the latest games I've tried on high graphics perfectly smoothly. The specs are in my sig.

im running a crappy Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics on my laptop, and it seems to be fine foor modeling, and general testing, not so heavy on shaders though.

for heavy poly work, you would need a lot of RAM

That's twice the specs on the same on my desktop I'm using now! (well, 1gb ram for me, 256mb vid card)

Uhh. I'm too lazy to fill this in right now. When I get the nvidia game further into working, I'll add a post to it.

You know, if your going for a pre-owned laptop, try an IBM Thinkpad, I have a really old one, 1ghz or something, and it's actually pretty decent for DBPro - a newer model should be good.

Plus, they have clit-mice, the little red dot on the keyboard provides far more accuracy than those stupid pads. I'd actually take my old beat up Thinkpad over my brothers Dell 1300 Inpsiron.

But if you have £1200 or so to spend, an XPS or an Alienware laptop are what you should look at, it makes sense to spend the maximum amount you can afford, laptops can't keep up so well, so the more you spend now the longer the laptop will last (technology wise I mean).

I bought a Gateway 4530GZ for business which came with an onboard Intel "Extreme Graphics 2" and it runs 3dsmax like a charm. No problems at all.

It's not the most powerful machine but it was solid, portable, and I got a good deal on it buying it on clearance.

Unless you want to play heavy-duty games on your laptop something a little more watered down is ok. So long as it runs DirectX you should be able to model and program in DB on it just fine.

I would recommend at least a Celeron M processor (Pentium M preferred) and up.

Dual core processor are great, it's like 2 processor in one. I've heard that Intel and AMD are already working on processor with 4 heart.

My suggestion is to take a 3d program that you have made on a cd and try it on a laptop in a shop before you buy. That way you can know for sure if it will do the job. I did this and salespeople were only too happy to let me if it meant a potential sale.
Look for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card and a brightview screen. 17" is great to work on.
