In preferences the texture quality from 256x256 to 512 is much better, so wouldn't that mean 1024x1024 (or 768x"?) be much better than 512? Could this be an option in the next update?

by selecting high quality, by default the engine just "allows" the original texture rather than scaling it, so you can have any texture size you want as long as youve got it on high settings.

Also, in the FPE file you can make a property called "Reduce Texture" and give a value of -1. This will make the engine ignore any texture resizing and let you use any size you want (within reason).
