Congrats to the winners... those are awesome games.

If we want to update our retro page, or the zip file that is on the Darkbasic server, does Rich do that for us? I have a feeling he's going to go sleep for a week... heh.

The latest version of the game Scud Stopper wasn't downloaded it seems, but I highly doubt it was 13th in the standing or the shadows would have mattered anyway so it's no big deal! But I'd like ppl to get the latest download if they can.

The webpage for the game is www.shinybrain.com/games/ too and the latest download is there as well... just for posterity.

Again, genius competition idea... all those games. Wow!

I will be more than happy to do a follow-up to this compo which allows people to post their finished games and we'll host the files too.

If you've updated your game since the compo version and IT'S FINISHED then send it to me If you're still working on it, wait until it's finished, then send it. But do send it.

Cheers,

Rich

I must say Im quite surprise my DarkWolf3D didnt get one of the 12 prizes... I mean, if I look back to the way games should have been judged, to all the extras (New monsters, more keys, switches, etc...) I added and the responds from all those who were able to play it, I just can`t see where I went wrong. Then again, It could just be my frustration talking. Anyway, A big congradulation to all winners.

All of the Top 12 did one very important thing - they either bettered the original or did something significantly different with it to merit attention. I have to admit I spent quite a while playing DarkWolf and we all really liked the graphical style of it but it did have flaws which I mention in the review that you can't really argue about (the enemy AI and shooting for example). We could never please everyone but because people put so much hard work into this we offered the same back by way of the reviews, pro's and con's for every single game in the hope the authors can learn from it. Our criteria was always gameplay. We never had a hope in hell of pleasing everyone and as more and more people play the other 90 odd games there will be many discussions about "why didn't this win?" etc, but that is life I'm afraid. I know how much time was invested in playing these games and I have a clear conscience.

Cheers,

Rich

I cant argue about the AI but well, I could surely argue about the ennemies shooting, they hit you often but not always... the code for shooting use randomness (as youll see as soon as I get back to my design computer and update my game and add source to the download). Ive crossed the second level more than once without killing anyone one and without getting hit... I think the real problem with my gameplay is that its to hard and its realy made for hardcore Wolf3d players =( . Next time Ill try to make a less specific game =(. And I remember you had quite a lot more criteras than gameplay or pos and cont when you announced this compo someyhing more like a review from a game magazine with notes on differents points (in wich gameplay was One of about 5 or 6)... anyway It was not a flame but a scripted sadness =(, as the last sentence stated.

Lord, don't feel to bad, least you entered the compo, I was no where near acheiving something playable at the time the compotition finished, and I was extremely impressed by the entries even from just the screen shots available. I'd written a game available on my site but it lacks sound altogether, and plus to be fair, it wasn't done using DBPro. But who knows what the future holds for you, myself and the other candiates for future competitions. Don't be to hard on yourself mate.

Lord B please don't feel too bad about it, I can understand being sad but your game is great - then again that's the problem, most of the games were great! Let people download it and see what they think at the end of the day it's the players comments that matter most, not a free box of s/w or something.

Cheers,

Rich

very impressive everyone!,I still cant get over theres -->95<--- new games!

I think thats an indication of how far people have progressed and the amount of crews are growing with really good results.

Someone might have to make a logo that signifys the award.
then winners can place this on the games site.
DBS would have to officially recognise the logo for it to be of a stature.

awesome work, so much talent

Unfortunately mine wasn't judged with the final version I submitted, but not to worry probably wouldn't have changed the outcome. My link is http://w1.213.telia.com/~u21319976/downloads.htm
if anyone wants the final version.

Congratulations to the winners..

I very much appreciate the effort that went into presenting the competition results.

It would be nice of a similar thing could be setup for a gallery area of finished products?

We'd email you the link, the pictures at specific sizes and a bit of text, you knock up a 'review' and gellerise it?

It would be work sure, but there's many finished programs these days and no-where for them to be showcased.

Sorry for scatty English, stayed up last night to see the results...

I'm sorry to have to mention this Rich, but if this was the main yardstick by which the winners were decided, here is what I have done to the original Pong.
1)I provided 'realistic' physics which takes into account not only where the ball hits the paddle but also the angle of incidence of the ball onto the paddle in order to provide for better gameplay, whereas pong had a monotonous 45 degree bounce angle.
2)I introduced an advanced 3D mode that has never been attempted before in any game.
3)I provided for a two mouse controller game which has never been attempted before.
4)I provided a natural language coach which I doubt has been inserted into a game before.
5)I have rigidly maintained the "retroness" factor. There are still 2 paddles moving in a linear fashion. If I did otherwise, unlike some of the other games, it wouldn't be "retro pong" anymore.

I think 1) qualifies as "bettering the original" and 2),3) and 4) qualify as "doing something SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT"

This is the 3rd compo I've entered hoping to win a copy of DBPro. I must say that although winning isn't everything it does help when you have the extra cash for a bottle of beer.

I agree with the congrats to the winners, and I'd also like to thank the DB team for the obvious amount of work and effort in putting together over 90 pages of screenshots and downloads and giving feedback on each and every game that was submitted. Considering the size of the task it amazes me they were able to get it done this quickly. Thanks guys.

I'm not surprised that I didn't win, at first I did aim to improve on the original, put more effects in, have more balls that did stuff, and put 2 player and player vs computer in, but I simply didnt have enough time, the main collision detection took too long to work out!

Congrats to the winners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"i was hoping they were gonna put them all in order so i could see where i came. too bad. back to downloading."

Sorry but I cannot do that - there is no way I can order all 95 entries in a "Rank of Quality" - that would just be grossly unfair (and, to be honest, an impossible task).

mamaji4 - I think I should win a free beer from you for the amount of times you kept re-submitting your game

Cheers,

Rich

Cool Rich. The beers on me. You name the time and place.
LOL. And I am truly sorry about the number of times I submitted the game. Sure must have given you a lot of heartache.

Yeah, My congratulations goes to all the winners also.

I was creating a third person space sim remake of Space Invaders but there were several factors that made me decide not to enter it: It was extremely hard to navigate, the enemies were way too good and it really didn't resemble Space Invaders at all lol.

We, from Tupix team, are so happy with the retro games results and specially with the RedSituation's mention. Thank's for the DarkBasic's guys for the contest and the great repercusion you got - Rich thank you for your attention and patience! To the winners, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You did a excellent work in your games! We have some plans about RedSituation future, we'll work on it in two ways, the first is a comercial game with a more elaborated history, production, etc. The second we will release RedSituation Open Source project for the people who wants to learn how to create a game and how to do it using Darkbasic engine. We hope to bring to DB community more and more adepts. All the code generated by the community will be for free download and share with the members (incluse the RSOS compiled game). Feel free to contribute with us, send your tips, codes and ideas!

Now we are finishing our home page (with support for english language) and we'll be glad if you visit us!

There's some details in RS game which wasn't mencioned, let's go!

1) Shoot in the corridors lights and you'll be surprised......

2) Use the first tip do kill the bad guys!

3) In the roof there's a room...pay attention on the signs or....

4) In the blue door rooms (not in all) there's a medkit to heal Agent Oito's energy, use it!

5) After you steal all the Top-Secret-Documents the lobby's door will open, get out of the build....quickly!

Thanks again and see you in the next challenger!!!!
