recording your screen movements

is there anyway of recodring the movements that you make on a screen a sort of a cam corder on the screen taking a shot and saving it as a bit map or creating an avi as you do things on the screen. I just want to make an animation. what i want appears on the screen. but i need to turn it into an avi file.
I have a word of advice...
..don't piss on an electric fence!
