Hello. If you've been monitoring the sticky at the top of the page you'll see that i've just figured out how to export my models from Blender to DBpro. Now that I've done that I need some more help.

Let's say that my recently created butterfly would like to have transperent wings, like this one on the attachment. The problem is, there is no universal transperent colour, so how can I make transperent wings? Is there a way to do this using a set colour like RGB 0,0,0?

Just use a texture with an alpha channel

Big whorls have little whorls which feed on their velocity,
Little whorls have lesser whorls and so on to viscosity. - Lewis F. Richardson

This works well in Paint shop pro or photoshop

layer 2 - your graphic with an opacity, say 50%
layer 1 - jetblack

save your file as a working copy in the programs native format eg: PSD photoshop

export or save as png or DDS(requires plugin)

yes... Alpha channel... And, um, how do you do that? I don't have Paintshop or photoshop, all I have is the gimp *sigh* and I'm not too familiar with alpha channels and the like. Before I got DBpro I did all my graphics in MSpaint, which was somewhat... whats the word i'm looking for... Useless. All my 3d stuff was done in blender with no external programs used.

it should work for the gimp as well but you might be limited to PNG

Do I have to set up any command in DBP to tell it that jet black is the transperent colour?

Ooo ooo ooo, I figured out an easier way to do it!!! With my way I only need one layer.

First I set the image colourkey to 0,0,0 and then I set the "set object transperency" flag to 2. That way, all the black areas on my UV map dissapeared!!!

I just thought that if someone else is having trouble with this sort of thing then they should hear this.

Which works fine if you only want totally opaque or totally transparent. If you want areas of semi-transparency then you will need to use textures with alpha channels.

sigh...

alpha/opacity maps, what you need to know;

Black=transparent
White=Opaque.
any colour (best to stick to grey though kids!) inbetween varies the opacity, depending on its intensity.

in DB, load your alpha image, set it to be the alpha map for your model.

this of course assumes you have actually UV mapped the model onto one texture. you'll end up with headaches as the whole model is alpha'd by DB.

oh, and using alpha channels in GIMP... a quick google got me this; http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-layer-alpha-add.html

I don't have a sig, live with it.

also why would you set image colorkey 0,0,0? thats the default

also if you want your buttefly to have transparency i say you do what indi said, or if you want the whole butterfly semi-tansparent try "set alpha mapping on objnum,50" or sumthing like that

good luck
