thanks for showing that

yeah i think you should darken the fur some more, and possibly the skin, to kinda differ from the barbarian.

im suprised you didnt do backward knees for this guy, what with the hooves and all

I had planned to, but after Googling some concept images I thought the "tiptoe" stance looked a little cooler. Yeah I'll darken the skin to make appear more like hide rather than skin.

Jeez ive not seen this thread in ages.
I was actually shocked how good/realistic all the models look. Particular fave is the night elf

Quote: "And here is the minotaur, named Kaz for KeithC."

So what? Does Kieth look like that or something? Haha just midding Kieth (Even if you do have horns/hairy legs/hooves etc etc )

Awesome work, Mark.

The only problem with the normal knees is that it makes the character look like he is wearing high heels. I think that if you added a natural bend to the knees it woul remove this appearance.

Meaning: Instead of straight human legs make them have a nice bend at the knees. Remember that carrying the extra weight and the fact that it does walk on hooves means that his legs are not going to be straight.

RF

Reality Forgotten: There actually IS some bend in the knees, kind of hard to tell in the pic since there isn't a reference plane. Here is a side shot with a reference plane, does this look better?

I think his weight is centered pretty well, too much bend and he looks like he's taking a dump. Once he's animated I'll have a better idea though, if he looks to "prancy" when walking. Thanks for the comments.

Bond, I see the bend but something isn't right.I think it may be the proportion from legs to torso. I did some searching in Google and this is what I found. Your model comes really close. It is a great model I am not trying to take away from that. Something is just a bit off with it. Anyways here is the photo.

keep up the good work!

*Edit*
I think i figured it out. the feet are to human looking. they should be hoofs. As it is now they look like old canvas backs (converse all-stars). Alos the upper leg is not beefy enough. they need to be larger, remember the minotaur is alot heavier than a human so the legs have to be like tree trunks. The legs are also what give the minotaur it's lethal power. The neck is to skinny as well. it has to be thick enough to cary the face and the horns. and judging by how bulls use them horns to fight and other things they neck should be a massive extremity. also the the neck and the chest meet in an akward position. there should be little or no seperation between the two. Look at the photo below to see what I am talking about.

Regards,
RF

i think it looks fine, reminds me of something you would see in titan quest or Might and magic.

so photo realistic, if you seen that in anchant times, it would scare the crap out of the villagers.

have you ever considered of working for a professonal game company?

Reality Forgotton: that picture doesn't show up...

I agree that the legs and neck should be thicker, but I'm not looking to change the concept of the character. When I searched for a concept, there were many body types - ranging from bulls that looked like they were standing upright, to more human type designs. I leaned toward the human designs like shown below:

I took the design of the feet from the first pic as you can probably tell. Thanks again for the comments, I'll be thickening him up in a few places to make him more "hulking".

Ah, I see what you're saying. Yes I like the way the neck and head are joined in that pic. I think I'll widen the base to join the neck more at the shoulders and make more of a taper. That's a cool pic, I almost wish I would have used that as a concept, love the chest plate.

wow, was just popping into the 3D board and looked through all the models you made in this thread, really good stuff man!

my only critique is that they are a little high poly (4k ish might be a little too much for average NPCs, though it'd be great for a main character)

One man, one lawnmower, plenty of angry groundhogs.

Bond, why does he have a set of bull horns, then a set of giraffe-like horns? It looks kind of strange with the giraffe horns there.

Besides from that, it looks great, but maybe the legs could be more bull-ish, than just having the feet resemble hooves?

Hehe, no reason at all other than I thought it looked cool at the time. I'll either remove them or make them really short and nubby, I just like them for some reason.

Ok almighty bond1, i have one suggestion that would make him look tougher. Break off one of his horns so one is full and one looks like it was broken off. Just a suggestion.

a random question, but what ambient and specular settings do you have in max?

some places look pitch black but the overall model is lit up pretty well, is there one or more lights?

Though some of what I said (and am still saying) is not possible to make, due to the limitations of FPSC!

I'm just using a standard 3-point light setup, a nice way to show off a model's form and silohette. A key, fill, and kicker light. Key light shining top down at an angle, fill light from the opposite side shining upward at the model. And the kicker from the back to define the silouhette.

I don't have a specular map yet, so I'm just using a material with the specular set at 10 for a little sheen.

I'm pretty sure Lee told me his new character shader will use 3 lights, one of them being a bounce light from the ground, so this setup might be pretty close to how X10 lights the models.

ah, ok, i was wondering how to set up a good scene, and whether or not they'll be too dark etc.

judging by the demo video shown with the instancing of characters, ive given mine some 'gloss' and a little more specularity than default, which im hoping will come out right.

Sweet, can't wait!

Just out of curiosity, what weapon/s are you making?

Also, while looking at the first post I noticed that you said that it is "aimed to take advantage of x10's features". Does this mean that I/we HAVE to have x10 version?

Yeah things are going great, working on the weapons now. I've got a thread going about them in the FPSC Media forum in case you haven't seen it: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=101100&b=24

I'm hoping to have this done around the time X10 is released, which would be the end of April. There are a few things I'm holding off on until I can test them in X10, to save myself potential extra work.

Thanks for asking

Bond, all this is amazing modelling and texturing, but i was thinking you could made different variations of each person.

I'm just think that having 1 type of human, elf, dwarf, wizard, troll, knight, barbarian, satyr, minotaur and all future character models would be kind of lame to the person playing. mabye just slightly change the muscular build and hair colour/style of each model and i think it would make the pack so much better(despite the modified filesize).

I love your models and the fantasy genre and i'd just like to see 2-3 variations of each model, possibly different gender if it isnt too much work.

thanks

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

I agree, I'm only showing one version of each model. But I plan on having AT LEAST 2 texture variations for each model just to break up the sameness a bit. Nothing too drastic though, just enough to give some variation so you're not looking at the same character over and over.

I think if you look at how this pack is going to shape up, this will be one holy heck of a deal. 20+ characters, probably about 5-7 weapons or so, and a ton of segments and entities. If you look at the rest of the FPSC model packs, this one is going to be a must-have for the price if I say so myself, even if you're not into the fantasy genre.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Are you planning on doing Male Elves if you haven't already, and If you have texture variations could you have one of the elves variations to be a human skin sort of thing the orangy pinkish or whatever it is. Because the elves in my game that I'm planning (It hinges entirely on this pack) need non-purplish skin.

Anyways, great work.

Hey Chupa Capra, thanks for the bump.

I've been given the opportunity to do a special little "project" for X10's release later in April, so my Fantasy pack will go on hold for just a little while. That's fine with me, I was getting a little burnt out anyway, plus it's hard to go much further with things until I have the final build of X10 anyway.

But for X9 users, I think I've stumbled on a pretty significant speed increase for characters. Check out my Minotaur in the current FPSC, there are twelve in the room and I'm still maintaining 31fps even on my laptop, and the minotaur has 5000 polys! When I try it with the stock characters, using the same AI scripts, my frame rate is about 21fps, even though they have less polys.

Anyway, probably no updates for a few weeks...

Well, not that I want to purposely keep something secret, it's just that the process doesn't seem totally perfect and 100% reproducible yet. Since all .x exporters are so finicky, there are a few vairiables. Plus the models seem to crash in Vista at the moment too for whatever reason, hopefully it can be nailed down. But it's encouraging!

Thanks man.

BTW: Those first few characters (peasants and troll) at the beginning of this thread will be updated, if not totally redone. They were made long before I even knew about X10, and plus I've learned A LOT since then. Everything from the dwarf onward will be kept.

maybe you should talk to lee about it that kind of speed increase is really needed. on the Minotaur its all good until the hands either make them beastier or humaner because right now they are like big human hands.

Hey bond, am i missing a link to a new thread or has there been no progress for a while?

(sorry if i bumped a redundant thread)

Also, today (jun 24) i just purchased model pack 4, so i went to download the MA rated textures , but it says cannot to connect to server when i try to get onto your website? Is the host down or something?

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

Hi DieRider,

No there hasn't been any progress for a while, my wife and I just moved into our new house, I've started a new job, and I'm still trying to work on some X10 stuff. Just been really hectic for a while.

Sorry about that. Yes, I just dropped my previous hosting as the performance has become unacceptable in the last month or so. I've just purchased new hosting with a semi-dedicated server, and I hope to have everything up and running sometime today (hopefully). If you don't want to wait, drop me an email and I'll send them to you as an attachment.

As far as the fantasy pack, when I get back into it I'll start a new thread, some of the early work will be totally scrapped and redone.
