BSPs are the only real implementation of these kind of technologies atm. You can do portals and occlusion - try Visible Worlds from underware design (www.uwdesign.com)

as for octrees, its possible, ive done something just like it, cutting the world into cubes and only render the portion on the world your in and can see, i built a level editor that allows you to buils worlds based on octrees, its not complete but its based on this principal

Octree's
=========

Currently DBpro doesn't feature inbuilt rendering optimization from octree's. But it's meant to be coming soon (perhaps patch 5 or 6) . This is only suitable for static environments.

You can roll your own octree based occlusion code for dynamic objects though.

Portals + Occulsion.
====================

Portal rendering is an currently supported through BSP's internally.

You can use tools like Visible Worlds to achieve a similar results. The primary difference being that Visible Worlds is based on a dynamic object solution rather than a per polygon solution.

And next the Iraqi Information Minister will turn up and admit that Iraq lost the war.

Upgrade 6 will support Octrees/portals. I will have to ask about hardware occlusion.
