Fully working animated plasma barrier,switches on and off.



Comes with three different plasma decals.
Uninstall from the desktop the files will be found in entitybank/barrier.
To use, simply place the invisible wall where you want it and place one of the barrier decals slightly in front of it,make sure you place it correctly to ensure the player takes damage from the decal.



Name the invisible wall the same as the decal you use,barrier1,barrier2 or barrier3.



Put the name of the barrier you use in the 'ifused' box of whatever switch you want to use. e.g barrier1 etc.{Use one of the switches found in sci fi or whatever,I think any should work.}



You should now be good to go.
When you walk into the barrier the wall will prevent you from passing and the plasma will inflict damage to you,when you flip the switch it will remove the barrier,you can increase the damage in the decalbarrier.fpi found in the scriptbank.

One small point, you should place a player start marker to ensure the sound from damage works.

Great idea. I've been working on the same for my game, but more like a barrier you can pass through that hurts you. Didn't think of putting an invisible wall behind it to stop you from going through. Excellent idea!

Thanks for the comment Ben,it could be used with any of the decals, fire etc,to create a barrier.Just place the decalbarrier.fpi in the decal main.And rename the invisible wall and the switch 'ifused'.

I've created some altenative scripts, they work about the same, just slightly differently. hope you don't mind me posting them here.

This one for the wall:

Main difference is that the decal doesn't rely on a timer to work, but uses internal engine cycles to deduct health. Timers can be unreliable at times. The wall simply gets destroyed, instead of calling a different script.

Did you create the decals with Particle Illusion?

Yes I did create the decals with Particle Illusion.Will probably do some more to go with this,it is limited with having only sixteen frames though.

That's what I used as well, Particle Illusion is excellent for special effects. I'm using PI 2.0se, it came with a magazine years ago, have been using it ever since.

Ouch...that is not my definition of freeware or even cheap for that matter.

if you just do it as an image i heard that you can do as many frames as you like. just have it in a square (eg. 4X4, 5X5, etc.) I think this is true as long as they are all the same size; because the program can read it no matter how big as long as all the pictures are the same size.

I think this is true but i've never made a decal myself (i'm more of the modeling sort).

It's worth a try tyrano, I've been wondering about the same. I think you could even use more odd sizes, 2x4 as long as you specify it.

I did get it from a magazine (Computer Arts) years ago. Often these magazines give away older or special versions of software and in the past I used to buy an issue once in a while, that's how I did get a hold of Particle Illusion 2SE.

I don't think the demo can save files at all, at least not export to useable picture formats. As for learning it, I did find it very easy to learn.

I'd love to have v3, but for the few times I do use it, it's not worth the investment for me, but it sure has a more excellent features then v2. But for creating decals and some special effects, v2 will do also.

Filya,I've worked in the music and arts industries for many years,so I have many contacts,it's also part of my job to demo graphics and music apps on my laptop in schools and youth centres,so I am heavily funded.I can get just about any software I wish.Even fpsc was purchased for me.
I recently got a new laptop and this was paid for by local authority.
It's also part of the reason I spend so much time on these forums,more knowledge to pass on.

You can get a copy of Particle Illusion SE for a lot less,there are also academic packages for 50% the cost through re-sellers.

Can I ask how you set the images on the dds?
Did you do each one by eye or did you use some thing that does it for you?
It seems like a pain to get each one centered in each Sq.

Candle,I use photoshop which has snap to grid.I just rendered out sixteen frames 512x512 and pasted them into a 2048x2048 image,collapse the layers and reduce image size to 1024x1024 pixels.
The hard part is setting the animation sequence so it works o.k. as sixteen frames,before rendering.
I dont think you can exceed this frame limit,even by changing the decal spec.

@wgreg2001,the files should install into the correct folder paths when you unzip from the desktop,unless you have installed fpsc in a different location from the default c: drive location.When you open the zip file take a look at the paths for folder locations these will give a good idea of where the files should go if you have to place them manually.Let me know if you still have problems with this one.

When I walked into the barrier I could walk straight through it! I did lose life though. Good work, but any ideas why I can walk through it.

You need to place the invisible wall behind it Lozza, this is removed along with the decal when you trip the switch.See the first post above for instructions.

Hi,I downloaded this but I have a problem.

Whenever i put the decal in front of the barrier, i dont see in the game. I take damage but i cant see the decal. I have the switch working perfect and everything is fine but i just cant see the decal. any ideas?

P.S- great barrier by the way

Crypt Keeper,ensure the barrier1,2 and 3 decal folders are in your gamecoredecals folder,and that the decalspec.txt and decal.dds are in these.Make sure you follow the instructions above.You may be placing the decal too close to the wall.
