im confused

anyway you could try anim8tor(i think thats how its spelled) fot animating and lithunwrap for uv mapping. both are free. i have never used animator because i bought milkshape but it seems to make sence and it says thats what its for on the website there is a link to it on the free media thread of the dbpro board. you have to click on the old stickies link to get to it. lithunwrap is a fairly good uv mapping tool. there are a few bugs but there isnt really any better for free. you can find a link to it if you search the 3d chat board and there are some good tutorials on google for it.

i knew that

i would definatly reccomend milkshape. it takes a little getting used too and some people don't like it because it only uses tris but i have used both blender and maya ple and i actually prefer modeling in milkshape over both of those. i have had no problems with animation in milkshape though mayas animation is a little easier i still think milkshape is the better choice since it is only $30 american over a couple thousand american for the full version of maya

edit: sorry i dont remember the conversion to euros but i know that its no more then 60 euros

im not sure what you mean exactly. you can use vertex coloring to make basic textures but for more advanced textures you will still need to uv map your models

Milkshape has a very simple uv editor.

The best by far is Unwrap3d for $50US, lithium unwrapper is the predecessor and is free but not as good.

Unwrap 3d can do primitive shape uv mapping, pelt mapping, stack uvs etc.etc.etc.

yeah it involves opening the program and having a good look around.
Milkshapes is like a primitive box mapper

Unwrap3d is the best UV mapper i have used and well worth the $50 US.
Pelting a skin, akin to stretching out an animal skin on a wooden hoop with strings is a godsend
to the uv mapper.

ahh here comes the tricky bit.
assigning bones to vertices or polys can take some experimenting.
in the joints tab assign some polys to a models bone structure and then try to animate it.
it will answer a myriad of questions.
start with an arm, and play with the elbow joint. it will give you the knee joint as well in one foul swoop, then play with the torso to arm joint, that again will answer the other problems.

its a tricky process, once you get the hang of it though, you will discover a new world of fun in animation.

create a simple uv in wings then import. it can be anything as long as it has a uv texture to start with.

it means you have the lithium prior to the next one prior to the full version.

ok, just my 2 cents. its more expensive than milkshape and unwrap 3d, but it kicks ass for what it does, and I don't see many people mention it: Cinema 4d and Body Paint 3D. Cinema 4D is a rockin modeling program, that can make kickass high quality - commercial quality - models or low poly gaming type models. Costs around $250. US, and they sell a full student version. Body Paint is really the best unwrapping I have come across. You can unwrap your models in flat, sphere, cylindical, etc. You can break the texture apart by selecting faces. It has a magnet tool so you can move vertex by vertex (or several at a time) and lay out your unwrapped map as needed. If you adjust your model after unwrapping the texture map will update. And... you can paint directly onto the model or texture - I do this to add highlights then use photoshop with overlay mode layers... I have only been using it a little while, and its an awesome program!!! But you need C4D to use Bodypaint, since it only opens C4D, but then you can export to Direct X! Perfect for DBP!!

Here's a screenie of the axe I made yesterday. Needs better texture, but I only spent a few min in photoshop with it...

Happy game making!!!

can body paint do pelting and stacking of uv's?

pelting is like taking a wooden hoop and stringing out a skin of an animal, this way you get the uvs laid out very well for painting.
stacking trys to squish them all together in a neat blob.

sounds a lot like Unwrap3D in its feature set.

use google first before asking us, there's tonnes of great material already planned in verbose formats.

Indi: Bodypaint does allow skinning so you can stretch out a texture. This is done with either resizing or moving vertexs. you can highlight and separate any piece of the texture wether or not it is part of a group. It also allows squishing, if I understand you correctly. It also allows you to place similar or geometrically identical pieces on top of eachother so you only have to paint one piece and all pieces will have the same texture. Saves room on you map space too, allowing for more detail. In the example above, I didn't do much other than flat and cylinder map with some UV overlapping. Its a simple model so didn't need too much else. I think Maxon gives out free trials. Worth checking out. It only takes me about 10 min to unwrap and I've only done 3 since learning with some tutorials.

Darkdonkey: Milkshape animates pretty easily. Google "Milkshape animation tutorial" and you will get many. There is a good walk cycle out there that I used in the past. Also, Psionic is a good site with a zombie modeling and animating tutorial.

Good luck!!!
