I personally would very much like to get these books but after having never recieved my hard copy of darkbasic pro, I vowed never to order hard copy material from over seas again. (I ordered DBPro cd last January and gave up waiting after 6 months :S) moved sinse then and just never bothered to go back and check lol.

anyway to the point, If there where a pdf for hands on db pro then they would have another sale as yes I would be still willing to order electronic versions and still pay the same price.

I understand how you feel. That's why I purchased the online version of DBP. I wonder if TGC has an option for me to pay the differences later on so I can have all the games, 3d models and so on. I think they should.

On the topic, a lot of publisher now sell their book in PDF form. You might want to ask the publisher regarding this.

Can you not get it on Amazon? It's not actually published by TGC.

A PDF version is probably out of the question - it would be on eBay ilegally within days.

I live in Japan, and got my copy of DBP no problem. It did take a while, but they provided me with an online version while I waited.

Well they did set me up with the online version as well, but really I did'nt even need the cd to start with as I already had a copy of the online version before this. It was actually part of the big package deal with gamespace and other programs at the time that I purchased it.
But it was all the media that you get on the cd (darkmatter)and don't get with the online version that I was actually waiting for. It would have been nice if they had a download for this media but they don't.
No matter it still does'nt stop me from buying online versions, just purchased dark lights early this morning.

I never bought off ebay but I will check it out for the books.

Regarding the "if they give out PDF, it will be on eBay illegally", I'm not quite sure about this. There are quite a number of publisher that sell pdf version of their book.

Being a book writer my self (in a 3rd world country), the biggest problem a publisher face is :

a) university student fotocopy the whole book. if the book is aimed at university student, this will hurt the sales.
b) scanned / pdf'ed version of the book floating online.

In the end it just like software. You can put any security you want, but in the end it will get hacked anyway. The question is you want to make it easy for your user or the hacker?

With increasing e-book reader sales, I think publisher will pick this up. Trust me, I read a lot of book and own a lot of book. My biggest problem is when I move, and also room space. If a book is distributed on a CD (or server download), I will be easy on both.

To take for example is music. At first nobody want to sell it online, thinking the music will be distributed - only to realize it will get distributed anyway. But then mp3 player sales soar, and everybody has download option.

The same thing will happen to books. Trust me.

We don't publish the book, we just sell it, so there is no chance of us offering a PDF version unless the publishers themselves do so. That should be your next port of call (Digital Skills).

re: un-arrived software - we *always* re-send orders that don't turn up, but we have to be told it didn't arrive to do so (via our Support system, link is below). It doesn't matter how long ago it didn't arrive, we'd still re-send it.

@Rich, I appologize if that sounded rude, I know you'se do resend because you have sent a second copy that did'nt get to me either.

All I wanted that cd for to begin with is just the darkmatter that came on that cd nothing more. would be easier for you and I just to download the light version of the darkmatter. I mean if it comes with the cd and all then why not?

But really in all I just do not want to have to see TGC keep sending the item just so that I can have a few models they are good to their costumers, and they do stand by their word about resending items. This is why I still purchase products from them.

For me it is the mail system that I don't have much faith in.

Hm, I have ordered both of the Hands On books, and I live in Ontario too, hopefully it won't be a problem when I pay for it and it gets sent.

Back in August of this year I contacted Digital Skills about this. Because I'm not paying more for a book than I paid for the language I was hoping for an e-version.

Hello.

I'm a Darkbasic Professional user and I live in the US. There are actually quite a few DBPro users in the US, especially since a company used to distribute here. The only thing preventing me from purchasing your "Hands on DBPro" book is the price of it plus the cost of shipping to the US. It ends up making the book cost more than DBPro itself.

I know that small printing runs increases the cost of the book, and that shipping to the US will always be expensive, but is there any possible way you can make a downloadable digital version of the book? It could be delivered at virtually no cost to you, so whatever you charged for it would almost be pure profit. It is true there may be piracy issues when something is available in that format, but I think you would get many more sales that are just not going to happen with the current costs of the book, and still stay ahead of the game.

There are also measures to generate secure PDF files (aka eBooks) , but I'm not familiar at all with the specifics.

I would appreciate if you could provide an explanation or reasoning behind your decision to not have a digital version. Or if you have plans to provide one in the future? Maybe post it on your website as well.

Thank you for your time!

Thanks for your email. I think that what you say has a lot of sense. In fact, we've been considering an ebook version
but we have two main problems: piracy and direct selling.

We're looking at security methods for digital copies. Perhaps the main obstacle is that our business model isn't geared up for direct selling. We normally sell our books to other companies like The Game Creators or Amazon (UK)and not directly to the public.

But I can't escape the fact that what you're saying makes a lot of sense. In fact, despite the price, about 70% of the books are sold to US and Canada so I'm sure an e-version would generate many more sales with a price of about $35.00 per volume.

If it's any consolation, the supplements to both volumes will be available free from our website in PDF format.
"

Now I'm not suggesting to spam them with emails requesting the same thing. But maybe if enough people ask them about it, they'll seriously consider it. [email protected]

I'm not a real programmer but I play one with DBPro!

To the original poster, if you're in Ontario Canada Chapters carries "DarkBASIC Pro Game Programming 2nd Edition" it both on the website and (in London, anyways) on the shelf.

Not the "Hands On" book you asked about but I've flipped through it and it looks like a good resource

Also Amazon.ca has it and they ship from within Canada:
