I must be being real stupid, but how does one actually make a terrain?

You must all have like some expensive graphics package to make the airbrush effect of the terrain.

Also, how do I get things like houses on my terrain so characters can collide with the terrain and the houses?

nope you dont need any good graphics packedge, i like to make terrains in t.ed wich is quit cheep but if you dont wanna spend money i made this video tut on modeling landscape. i dont really get you when you say get how you put houses on them, if you mean how you put house on your terrain this can be done easilly with a modeling package u simple would have to inport you terrain and some buildings combine them ans then export them, if u mean put collision on them in dbpro if you go for the free alternative wich is soarkys i guess you could use the raycasting, another option is to use a hieghtmap and then load your object and possition them on your terrain and set collision.

hope this helped you.

So are you saying John, that that can all be done without spending anything. If so, I'd like to know how.

I don't have a budget and am probably too young to be programming. Never the less, I've been programming since I was 8 (6 years ago) and am still keen in not spending anything (because I can't) and programming to keep people entertained.
