Can anyone explain how to design the edge and shade textures for use in cartoon shading?

I'm tearing my hair out, all I get is either a black object or a colored object!

Thanks

As I understand it "Cell Shading" is not an effect of the textures as much as using a pixel shader to create the effect of flat "cartoon" style. I have used a cell shading routine in 3dsMax and it uses regular textures with no changes to them at all. Maybe the same effect could be done with modified textures, but that is for an artist type and way out of my domain

I for one would love to get cartoon shading up and running, but have tried a few options and couldn't make much sense of it

Has anyone got this to work a la Zelda: Wind Waker yet?

Another but probably insignificant point if you've got it is that it requires hardware support to provide cartoon shading. Not too sure how the video drivers would respond if the hardware specific extensions aren't available.
