This is my first model of this particular firearm... I am wondering how to make it better (I have gameSpace and MilkShape - the latter of which I have incredible trouble using...)

This is my first version ^. You can download that particular model here.

Wow, that is impressive. I hate to critic something like that, when I could never come close myself, but....

The only improvement I can think of is addon equipment for it, such as a scope, or silencer

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.

Very impressive, you shoul work on the texture a bit more as when you look at the handle you can see it's been stretched

hmm... following what you guys said... i remodeled some of it and textured it completely:

Quote: "Wow, that is impressive. I hate to critic something like that, when I could never come close myself, but....

I might add a scope as I acctually get the model to look professional, heres what i mean. Take a look at this model of an M4 from America's Army:

I don't really care that there may have been a dozen people working on this model... the game is over 2 years old! I just think that I should be somehow able to create a model at least half as good

To all you modelers out there, a question: do you ever get *really* frustrated when you work for hours on a model and it doesn't come out looking quite the way you would like it to?

Seems wrong to criticise, but there is a tiny patch that could use a little tweak...

looks a little too flat being in 1 plain colour

Not at all, thanks for that, will fix it

Oh yea... and here is the earlier version of my model in .x format for anyone to use in their project, etc. Credit isn't really needed, but apprieciated.

Umm... sorry to contradict you, but... I visit TurboSquid sometimes too, you know... if theres a section of a gun that I need and have trouble modelling myself, or just to compare my model to others'.

Yours looks very, very similar to this free model:

IDK if it is just me, but it seems like FPSs are the gametype of choice when it comes to DarkBasic. That would explain the amount of gun model(ler)s out there.

Why would you try to recreate that model anyways, it doesn't look that releastic of an M4. In short... whether or not you downloaded that model or not... you did a VERY good job recreating it.

It's not a copy... the handle is different... but it does look incredibly similar.

The main nreason I think people go for FPS games these days is that there isn't really that much in a multiplayer FPS... so it's a chance to create a couple of nice looking models, and mix them all up in a game that 90%+ people know how to play. Single Player FPS games do take a lot more work, a lot more models, and a lot more time (to both code, and play) but there are still a lot of them.

perhaps just my own opinion, perhaps a view shared by many... not entirely relevant to texturing M4 carbines though

@MrNick

you need to add more detail to the model because textures alone won't make it look that good.I also noticed that your model is very square...and thats not good because it looks bad, Try getting different views of the gun you want model and think about what you will have to to keep the poly count low. here are a few examples ... The first pic is my SCR7, notice how it looks good without the texture? and the other pics are of an SMG and it looks great with the detail and the texture.

I was being sarcastic lol.
But I did buy it.... a while ago, and dont use it. Firstly because it is an outdated version - max 6. and Secondly because my CD is damaged and I have major issues with it. Customer Support isn't being especially nice to me about an outdated piece of software.

Oh yea... and I remodelled my M4...

Obviously it'll look better textured, but i want to know what you guys think of the mesh quality before I texture it. It consists of 1130 Polys untriangulated.

yes, thats true, but I'm pretty happy with gameSpace right now anyways. In my opinion, its easier to use and cheaper... by about 2 grand :o

And yea... the product is no longer supported... discreet isnt a company anymore... =(

new mesh looks good... but depends what you're going to use it for...
Something high quality, it's ready to texture
For something lower quality or a game where frame rate is crucial. barrels can usually be 6-sided, and possibly, at a pinch, 4 sided.

Well, I am using this for a game, yes. And i figure ~1.2k polys won't kill my framerate... In fact... i believe most high-quality comercial games out there (Namely F.E.A.R., H2 and HL2) use very high quality meshes... which is mainly why you need a good GFX card to run them.

Never the less, they optimise their poly counts and use normal maps with their detail, here you've sacrifice polygons for smoothness, which could be used for more detail, but I don't think extra detail is necessary, as that can be achieved by normal mapping (Heck the magazine won't need that much detail with normal maps, that's what fear uses)

W00T @ my first success with putting this model into my in-game engine. Time for animation *shudder* and dealing with gameSpace's awesome .X export. (SARCASM!!)

well, the model's looking good in that shot... just a tiny gripe, since I'm just one of those nit-pickers that's never happy..

That big black circle... is that a reticle or similar? If so, I wouldn't actually say your M4 was pointing there... but that's just because I'm picky... nothing actually wrong with that... but to "fix" that, just position the M4 a wadge to the left... that and keep up the good work obviously
