ok been playing around, testing, and the man of the house let me choose what I wanted for christmas. altho I wanted to get 3d max was way beyond what I wanted to spend as a beginner.

so here is what I threw together

silo
hexagon
action 3d reducer
fragmotion
ms3d
ultimate unwrap
paint shop pro

any opinions on if this should be a half decent set up or not?

I use Milkshape, GIMP and Lithunwrap. And that works more than decent for me.
It's not really how much you can spend on a software, it's more about what you can do with that software.

As for your list, to be honest, I haven't used any of them except for Milkshape.
