I don't know about you, but I use 3rd party software to do it. (Game maker)

Create bitmaps. (background, buttons, shiny stuff)
Enable a method of user input.
Check the string and compare it to an array of cheatcodes.
Based on which cheatcode the user's string matches, do something.
