This is my WIP NVidia competition entry, and yes that title is quite the mouthful isn't it

as they said in this thread we can cross post from the NVidia board if we are after people to test our game, and i am! you can find the original thread here.
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=92016&b=32&p=1

Teh Demo!

Demo .RAR
Demo .ZIP
(.rar is smaller if you have winrar)

Note: to change the resolution to 800x600 hit the key "1" in the main menu. (to return to 1024x768 hit "2")... this will be included in the options menu later.

while you are playing, hit "1" for gore mode and "2" for flower mode, default is flower mode

The rest of the controls are explained in-game

what you can expect
shredded groundhogs
dynamite...
epic music?

Known problemos! Please read!

The text for the help bubbles doesn't appear when you change the resolution to 800x600
There are very few help bubbles lol
If the game returns to the main menu for no apparent reason. it means that one of the hogs broke through the fence and you lost (there will be a cutscene in the final game to inform you of this)
The health can go negative with no ill effect (except maybe crashing the program )

also the loading screen is temporary. Really this demo is to give you an idea of the gameplay as that's the only thing that's semi-finalized. (although i am planning on adding chainsaw wielding hogs, but couldn't get them done by today)

Here's a couple screen shots for good measure.
(old ones)

flower mode

gore mode!

(new one with GUI)

Gene, your double post, recent joined date, and your condescending comments make your posts void .

Really nice job Peter. Sometimes the movement feels a little jerky, but I really can see this becoming a great game.

It was pretty good. The controls worked fine for me. The animation of the groundhog beating on the lawnmower was really good. I got an error, I think after finishing the last level.

It said this:

Collision Error
"Error During Remove: Object (93) not setup"

@gene- does a game need to be innovative to be fun? I've noticed a pattern in other games... THEY ALL USE INPUT . We shouldn't play any games, that's so un-original.
If you really have something against killing try this game of mine.

@tiresius- i don't get that error myself, but i will try to track down what is producing it (i don't suppose it gave you a line number... that would be too easy ). thank you for playing!

Thanks @the rest of you!

Ya'll have to understand that i have a list a mile high of things to do before Feb 16th, including, 6 balanced levels, chainsaw wielding hogs, exhaust from the lawnmower... etc

Peter-

It didn't seem like a DBPro generated error like "image does not exist line 1383" or something. It looked like maybe an error from a DLL. Do you use any plugins for collision (Sparky's) or something?

You have a mile-long list of things to add, I know, how about a muddy patch that slows you down?

Also the AI of the groundhogs is a little random and if I sit near one he doesn't seem to attack. He might have been busy breaking a fence, though. Not sure but thought I'd mention it.

actually yes i am using sparky's dll. and yes that's a window's error meaning the program crashed.

[edit] Oh! i just realized! it's possible your computer doesn't support the shaders i'm using! there's a chance that might give an error. I need to add some code that detects if the machine can run the shaders before using them...

Quote: "if I sit near one he doesn't seem to attack."

yeah, at first i had it so that if you sat still they'd gang up around you and kind of jumped/bit/punched/swiped you... but it just proved to be more problematic then it was worth. if you sit still then they win by escaping through the fences. so there's no reason for them to bother you if you feel like sitting still heh...

There's a good chance my GPU doesn't support the shaders. It's a GeForce MX4 or something. Pretty bad.

That's probably the main reason I didn't enter the compo, I've never coded with shaders and my GPU can't even handle them!

Quote: "GeForce MX4"

yeah, GeForce MX4's don't support any shaders at all i think (i had one for about 4 years lol)... geforce 3's did... but the 4 is really just a souped up 2

i'll make sure i put a check in there so that you should be able to play it when it's done.

Runs nice a fast and pretty smooth. However, on the second level about half way through I received an error: Runtime Error 504 - Cannot grab image due to an illegal area at line 1030.

that comes from your health going to zero... in that demo i hadn't implemented anything to stop the game and tell the player they lost (and return to the menu) so it just tried to create a sprite for the health bar with a size of zero

Well, there are possibly hundreds of "polygon softwares" (usually referred to as 3D modeling applications).

These are the three ones (that i can think of) that are most commonly used with DarkBasicProfessional

(the order is not important)

1) Blender free

2) MilkShape 3D $25 (this is what i used for this game)

3) DeleD 3D (usually for buildings or levels, not characters)
lite version - free
pro version - $60

Don't forget Wings 3D for static models (no animations)
and 3D canvas pro for all of us TGC supporters

Haha, this is a coole game! I love the menus and the gameplay and the little flower explosions. My favorite part is when you get to smash the groundhogs on the front of the tracktor against a wall.

One thing that kinda bugged me, though, was how the tractor would just, like, instantly turn to a direction when you pressed that button, It would be cool if it would smoothly turn.

Thanks! I've almost done with the game and you can see my progress in my NVidia Compo thread http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=92016&b=32&p=1

Yeah, in retrospect, this is what i would have done (Bizar guy also suggested this). I spent about 2-3 hours awhile back trying to get it to work, but my code just isn't set up for it (the collision was one major problem)... at this point the main reason i don't do it is because the competition deadline is the 16th, so I'm desperately trying to get everything else done.
