I think the reason these challenges are getting such less attention is because theyve been getting extremely broad lately. When people are given a specific item or small set of items they can chose from to model, it makes the design process go faster, and not only that, but it forces everyone into a specific element, making it more challenging for everyone. When the thing to model is just "something 100 polies or less", it could be anything, how does voting work then? The only thing people have to concider is mesh formation skill, and possibly imagination depending on how out of the box someone goes, whereas if a specific goal is set, people can see how close it matches the original as well, and they also get a standard to base all of their votes on. Sure, that guys model of a boat is better than that guys model of a car, but I like cars, so Ill go with that, cant do that when everyone models boats, see what I mean?

Just my two cents Sepp...

The original contests consisted of 'Character design', 'Halloween', 'Improvement', 'Face of Beauty', 'Patriotic'. Things depicting something, they were quite popular, yes, but the system I follow is to let people choose their own themes. People come up with these challenging ideas that get the participating people to think and play with their skills. Something that is good for learning, although not how I learnt. I did find that people started to say 'Its a gaming forum, lets have poly count' and such things and I agreed, because essentially it would open up a more specific demand in which an budding 3D modeller would have to face, although I initially set it up primarily as a means for people to challenge themselves and improve their skills as well as creativity.

If what you're saying is, that's where people lost interest, I see the correlation, that meaning, should I set up a set of guidelines in which for the decisions of themes, the difficult thing would be criteria, perhaps we could have a forum discussion about the criteria and/or just the general nature of the contest.

What do you (people) say?

And cheers RUCCUS, it's good to hear people voice their opinion about the nature of these contests.

Just a quick question. 100 poly's triangulated, or no?

if it's 'triangulated' the most you can make from this is a decorative cube.

speaking of which, I started off by making one of those...

Crate: 100 polys exactly

but then I decided to try something a bit more daring for this challenge, and abandoned my crate.

Cockpit: 100 polys exactly again

I post this here as a WIP since I'm not entirely sure if I will texture it yet. We'll see

Good stuff indigo.

It's 100 polies, as in quads and tris, so if you have 1 tri and 99 quads that's fine, just make sure when you do a polygon count it is within 100 polies, with a slight margin of error which is usally about 20% (Which would be 20 polies over is acceptable)

Is this really fair. Anyone who uses milkshape is at a major disadvantage. I could add another 50 or so polys to my model if I could use quads.

I don't know if I can enter my model anyway. I made it from a 300 poly face I made before the competition. I used the face as a base and deleted polys from it to make it 100 polys. I do not know if this is acceptable for this competition.

The model:

It is exactly 100 polys

How about the equivalent of 100 quads, still being 100 polies, so as you say milkshape poses a disadvantage (There me thinking all 3d apps use quads) So if your model is made up of tris only, then 200 tris will be fine.

Nice models BTW.

Afraid not my friend, you can remake it for the compo though, it should be good practice.

Anyway, the collision falls under this rule if you're curious:

Quote: "You must make your entry specifically for the contest (Doing otherwise is counted as cheating)"

But if you quite cheekily foresaw the theme and made a model beforehand for it, just to humiliate me and my rules, then, well you'll only be able to enter on the condition that you tell me the winning numbers for this Saturday's lottery draw and that I win.

This is my WIP. Its at 100 Faces. Just want to see this will be ok, As some faces are more than 4 sided.I still need to squeeze a few more faces out, so i can put in a few more bits that are mising and then texture(which i find the hardest).

Not sure if this is my entry yet, but its as close as i feel its going to be. Really simple and most of my effort went into the texture, which was hard at 256x256.
Garage Model

Wire and poly count

And the texture which is 256x256.

[had to throw in some TGC graffiti]

EDIT: Click the thumbnails, anyone wants any higher res renders let me know.

Finished my Exams today. Just thought i might have a stab at a bit of the old low poly modeling. Modeled an MP3 player (I couldn't think of a better idea)

Here it is:

Its 101 polys. It used to be 100polys before i textured it. i still have no idea where that poly come from and is! The texture is 256x256

Cheers!

ok I figured I wouldn't be able to enter it. I have to redo it anyway because I now have twice the polycount to work with.

Decided needed work as felt 8 and 12 sided polys were for me against the spirit of contest(or more of a challenge to myself) so...
New WIP after a bit of jumping on and knocking last poly out. Got to 100 3 or 4 sided polys without to much different look.

and wire

Good contest by the way, seems very easy but needs a lot of thought.
Now on to texture. Hope get that done by deadline.
Edit
Found 2 not used polys so down to 98 cant find a use for them

Yea its a gothic tooth fairy. This is the low poly version of a fairly low poly model i made for the contest. The model actually was over so i reduced it, then i made a higher poly version(3000 tris). Anyway here is the low poly for the contest version. Not textured, but oh it will be sweet by the end of the weekend. Ok so a gothic tooth fairy.

PS: Could i post the high(er) poly model in the WIP thread? Oh and 119 polys.

And yes you can post the high poly version in the WIP thread if you must, just don't enter it.
