You could have it so It just retextures the model. Or you can use add limb or glue object quite easily

Coming Soon! Kangaroo2 Studio... wait and quiver with anticipation! lol

...nice title.
As for the clothes, re-texturing is the easiest.

but what if I want shortpants on the bottom and tank on top

then decide I want a sweater on top, but keep the shortpants?

i'm almost understanding limbs, but as far as making shortpants move on the same bone animation as plated leggings, i haven't a clue

the dark matter models have been textued using one bitmap so if you wanted to change each item of clothing you would probably find yourself creating lots and lots of bitmap images for each combination of clothing. you could always try editing the dark matter models using an editor (would have to be a decent one though) and then you could make it like the old dark basic models which had separate bitmaps for each limb. if it was possible to edit bitmaps during run time you could always try editing certain parts of the bitmap such as the area where the head is or where the arm is etc. then save the bitmap once you have decided what you want your haracter to look like and your models would then use that bitmap (provided you load the models afterwards or reload them once the bitmap has been created
(cool i think this must be the longest post that i have ever created

I have a word of advice...

Your best bet might be to create objects with all the different clothing options as limbs, and for each one, unhide one (like a short-sleeve shirt), and hide the rest (like long-sleeves, sweater, tank top, etc). For form-fitting clothing like spandex or bikinis, just re-texture the mesh and hide the clothing.

this is a tricky thing to do.

essentailly u have a hidden limb inside each object of the character.

eg chest model mesh has a limb inside.

if u name them accordingly

chestmesh
chestlimb

its easier to work out later on when glueing to the right limb.

make your limb more than a plain to start with as some 3d packages wont allow 2 vertices forming a plain to be a true limb.

u can then use glue object to limb.

u can do the same with a meshed model but remember to add the inbuilt hidden limb markers to the correct bones.
