I've been programing for about 2 years but haven't got very far. I want to know how to build a 2D adventure game, for example, the 'Mario' games. Can someone tell me the basics and/or give me a template I can work on.

P.S. I'm on DBC not DBPro so I can't work on files written in DBPro.

Mario is actually a platform game not an adventure and the method used to write them is entirely different.

It's too big a subject for anyone to answer you fully in a post like this - you really nead a tutorial on the subject.

I'm sure I've seen one somewhere, but I can't remember where I'm afraid. Check out the stickies at the top of the forum.

Essentially, you need to create the backdrop to your game using tiles on a grid. Your characters would all be sprites.

Scrolling the screen is probably easiest done using a 2D Scroller engine and once again you'll probably find something useful using the forum search feature.

Another option which is probably easier is to make 3D graphics with 2D gameplay. Something like this:

I made that code ages ago so if you choose that route then I can make you a considerably nicer example.

If you are not too busy and do not mind doing so I would be interested in seeing another example of this. I find it very neat and I am thinking about attempting to make a game with this style. Thanks.

Here you go. I'll add to it but this is just a starter. If you want any explanations then just ask.

I downloaded the first one and tweaked it a bit... I want to know how to put falling platforms (when you walk on them, they fall) in a game like that. Can you help?

Sorry I took a while to post; the forums marked this as read and as me being the last to post! Yep. No probs. Do you want them to fall and then that be it or fall and regenerate after a while?

There you go. Use the same project I uploaded earlier but change the code to the above.
