Has anyone noticed any problems with bump mapping? First of all I thought bump maps were supposed to be black an white images. The one in the example is colored. Second I applied the bump map from the example to a cube, and one face looked pretty nice but all the other faces were either completely dark or nearly completely dark. I also got a regular black and white bump map off the internet and tried the same thing. It looked terrible (kind of just looked like it was using the bump map as a texture) and the cube was very dark.

...ermmmm. I guess you can use colour. But then it will probably just take the average of the darkness off the amount of colour. As for the rest...

well when I use a black and white bump map it just looks like some blury black and white texture over the object and makes it real dark. The only semi good results I get is when I use the colored one that came with the examples, then certain parts of the object is real dark but the part that isnt looks pretty good.

Im using a geforce 4 and the drivers that came with it...how do you invert it? I posted a shot over there too with a grey scale bump map and the results dont look so great either.

well just open the file in mspaint and then invert is on one of the menus
and i'd suggest you update to the latest detonator drivers which can be found >here< - the base drivers are oftenly slightly flawed, but they're the most stable at the time of release.

not really sure what else to suggest, just out of interest is your GeForce4 a Ti/Ultra or is it an Mx?
if it was any other of the GeForce line wouldn't make a different, but the Mx 420,440,460,480 cards don't support any of the advanced features in dbpro. So this could be the actual problem, if not i'd say its time to email Lee because i can't think of anything else you could be doing wrong

I ran the the example and inserted a control camera using arrowkeys and set ambient light 100. Then when I hit the bump mapping option I didnt really notice any change in the asteroid except some parts of it seemed darker, then I went to the back side of it and it was nearly completely dark.

The thing behaves differently if you go from 1 to 9 instead of 9 to 1.. did you try both ways?..could it be your case? ( your are doing something else before applying the bump)
Sorry i can't test your example i have a Geforce 2 mx
