New Demo

This is my Nvidia / DBP compo entry. I have posted here aswell because I really need some feedback about the game. It is very nearly complete. I just have the options screens to fully impliment. So, hopefully I will have time to make any changes that are needed.

I would like any kind of feedback at all but I would really love some feedback on the difficulty level of the game. Obviously I am quite expert at it now and Mrs. Scraggle who is play testing it for me is getting rather good at it too. So, I need some opinions from people that haven't played it yet (or not much anyway).

You start playing at 'Normal' difficulty but you can change it at any time by pressing keys 1-4 (1 = Easy).

In this demo you can play the 'Classic' game. There are no missions to complete in this style of gameplay. Instead the timer and the objective bar will start at half filled and will decrease if you do nothing. To progress to the next level, you need to fill them. You do that by destroying objects and you do that by clicking on any object that is the same shape and/or material as the one you are on.

The first object you click on must be in the outer shell. You will get more points for getting objects nearer the centre. Your score will increase as the length of your chain increases (how many in a row). You can break the chain at any time by clicking on the Break The Chain button. You will then be able to select any shape in the outer shell again but of course your scores for getting new shapes will be dramatically reduced.

There will always be objects to destroy because they don't disappear when you destroy them. Instead they turn into a 'bubble' that can't be selected. After a short period that bubble turns back into a shape.

The options screen isn't fully implimented yet so clicking on the options button might produce some wacky results!

The music in the level is by Matt McFarland and the music between levels is by Fallout. I have emailed both of them requesting permission to use their music and hopefully I will get the go-ahead otherwise I will have to find something else

Now seriously, that's probably the the sleekiest 2D game I've ever seen.

Ooops!

Sorry. There is an option to set your screen resolution but it defaults to 1280 x 1024. Not good if your monitor doesn't support it because you can't get to the option screen to change it.

It's good feedback though. You have found a major bug that needs to fixed ... thanks

Note to anyone else: Don't download it if your monitor doesn't support 1280 x 1024. At least not until I fix it.

Oh! You're welcome. That's what I was trying to do all along. Lol! I figured that was the case so I right clicked on the exe and on the 'properties' menu told it to run in 640x480 resolution but it didn't help.

Very nice.

I played on normal level but found it quite easy and played just the once until it crashed with a object soed not exist at line 1852 error. It was as I finished level 8 or 9 I think. I assume your demo only has that many levels.

I like the end of level animation, although when the 'doors' reopen it still shows the previous level number on the doors. Maybe better to show level number you are about to start.

Also if you click on the info button at top to bring down a help screen showing game objective, which is as you say useless in the demo, you are forced to use keyboard to dismiss it. Why not just let a mouseclick dismiss it. Also, I hope you will be showing these level objectives automatically at beginning of levels so player knows what the hell he is supposed to be doing.

I also had a slight glitch, on level 6 I think it was, where one of the rings got stuck and just stuttered for quite a few seconds, but maybe it was some weird bouns I collected as I also noted sometimes a ring would speed up for a few seconds aswell.

So, it seems 'Normal' level is too easy. At least it is for you anyway. Mt Father-in-law (to be) found it very difficult. So, I would still appreciate more feedback concerning the difficulty level.

Crashing at level 9 is a known bug. It is when Fire and Water are introduced. You need to get water before fire. It's a very easy bug to fix, so, I am anoyed with myself for not doing it before uploading the demo.

Having the door show the next level is something that I wanted to to do and should be really easy to impliment but it is turning out to be very tricky. I obviously have some stray code in there that is turning it back to the previous level number but I can't find it

The help window isn't fully implimented yet. So, the spacebar to get rid of it is a temporary thing. I will be putting a button on it.

I wasn't planning on having the help window open automatically for each level but it might be needed especially for the mission games where the objective is different for each level. Perhaps I could put it in but include an option not to show it unless requested because once you know what you are doing it would just get in the way and probably be quite annoying.

The stuttering is an annoying bug that I can't seem to kill. It is because you picked up a 'pause' bonus which causes that particular ring to stop for a few seconds. So, in that respect it works but it shouldn't stutter. Time for some bug spray!

I fixed the stuttering bug, so thank you for pointing it out Spooky

My latest demo has been downloaded 6 times and yet Spooky is the only person I have feedback from.

Come on people, please give me some feedback. Good, bad, I really don't mind but I would like something to give me an idea of what needs tweaking in the final two weeks.

looks very nice...scraggle you seem to be very very good with 2D stuff... you dont see that very often so i admire it.
