$600 isn't going to buy 3ds max. But, you could get Softimage XSI for $500, and still have a hundred to spare. XSI is a great full featured modelling and animation package that can do everything that max can do.

Max is very complex, and expensive, I'd take Bond's advice and check out XSI instead. There's also Rhino3D, which is my favourite modeller, but there's no native animation or UV mapping features, I only use it for mesh creation.

I concur with Bond and VanB. XSI also has some of the best animation tools out there, and when you buy foundation they usually include a few learning DVDs. Make sure you download the demo, to see if it runs on your computer first.

I've used Rhino once when my friend had it... I never thought NURBS would make a good game model -- too many polys from the get-go. Of course, I barely scratched the surface of Rhino... so I'll let Van-B be the final authority on the matter.

For UV stuff... get Ultimate Unwrap 3D... I just bought it and so far, I love it.

BTW... how long have you been modelling?

XSI for the price is really great...modelling tools are really nice and complete...in max you need to get polyboost to get same flexibility...
animation tools rocks but you need a bit time to get in ...

the only things in XSI how i don't like to much compare to max is the unwrapping..i don't nean bad but to pelt model the process is a bit longer than max or even wings 3d..

Xsi export and import X format but you need to test out sometimes as it doesnt work on the first time espacially with animation...

digital tutors purpose a lot of free video tuts for XSI..

Hi,

Max has a great set of tools, even their animation portion is drastically improving. But, don't worry if you can't afford it, because, XSI is also a great program, and an incredible bargain at $500. It used to be that Max was the cheap package, and Softimage (XSI) was the really expensive package, and for good reason. I usually don't think of Max and XSI as being in the same league, from an animating position. XSI/softimage has always been about the best (IMHO) when it comes to animation. I use Maya Complete at work, and it's good, but I'd personally like to get back to XSI/softimage for animating some day.

Which ever package you get, you will be stepping into the pro level stuff. So, I'd suggest you get some training on whichever package you choose.

I know the Valve team has been using XSI to create their latest Half-Life 2 stuff. And personally, I really love the interface. It has a gentle inviting feeling to it. I may just get it myself.

That's how we roll

I don't know if this is against the rules, but ypou can buy the education production bundle for 650. with comes with max 8 for a year. maya, photoshop, illustartor, dreamweaver, flash, and the rest of adobe production bundle. the only problem is that d studio max is a very hard program to learn and it will take serious time to learn any 3d program.
