Are there any tutorials on how to make vertical shooters? I'm kind of new to programming (I've only programmed some minor stuff on my TI calculator, which is simplified BASIC language), and I'm really interested. My only progress so far has been creating a scrolling space/star background. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if there's a tutorial but since your new to programming you need to learn the basics first.

Read the help files to learn about:

Arrays - To store each ships x and y coordinates and other data
Sprites - To show the actual ships

Moving the ships is just like scrolling stars. You change the y coordinate to move the ship down the screen. You're starting off right by not making a near impossible goal. Welcome to the community!

Thanks for the help, I just have one more question: where can I get some good spaceship sprites? I'd preferrably want some SNES-style ships, if possible, and relatively small, too.
