Start with something simple don't go do what I did which was try to nake a 2d mmorpg as my first game

Desert conflict progress: 1%
Media: 25% Coding: 2% Gameplay: 1%

I am in the same position. My advice is to study the langauge for a few weeks before trying to start anything major - thats what I did when learning Java. Try little programs and write down pseudo-code before touching the keyboard
