Hello people. I have recently got back into the modelling mood I dug up an M16 model that I had made a month ago. I did a bit more modelling, made a texture, animated it and put it into FPSC. I have also been experimenting with shaders and they really take objects to the next level, graphically. So this is an M16A3, the full auto variant in the M16 series. The gun itself hasn't got many polies but the stupid arm is about 900 so i'll change it in the future. In my opinion this is the best gun that I have made.

Mod's, I read the "Before Posting Media.....Please Read." announcment and this should be ok to post here since I have an in-FPSC screen. Thanks

Lol, I used capitals in the thread title "M16A3 WIP" to show that I am using abbreviations and I got a rude message "noob turn off caps lock now" in red.

Sorry, I'm afraid not. I plan to include it as part of a commercial pack.

Yes, as long as you have the in-game screens you can keep the thread going here.

There is no "M16A3" however. The gun you show is the M16A2 (it has a 3-round burst); the M16A1 is the version with full automatic fire. You can tell the difference by looking at the flash suppressor, handguard, etc. (I believe there are around 12-15 actual differences between the two version).

There is also an M16A4 which is currently in service with the US armed forces.

Apparently 4 years out of the Army has produced rapid change. Last I saw was the M4 Carbine introduced. I knew there were many variations/changes made to account for options such as new sights, launchers, grips, etc. Learned something new today.

That wiki chart is my buddy

Consider adding a little geometry for the Delta Ring. I think it'll help sell the A2 hand-guards better because it looks sort of like a free-float tube at the moment. A rear sight aperture would be nice too. Otherwise looking like you're headed in the right direction.

Keep at it and have fun with shaders.

(I've read in the many disputes over the validity of the A3 and there are some confusing factors so don't feel bad about it, Keith. AFIK, there were no rifles issued with "M16A3" marked on the lowers. They were either marked "M16A2E3" or made by using M4A1 lowers with M16A2 uppers. For some time, Colt marketed their flattop upper as an "A3" upper which has also leads to confusion. Colt's RO646 (aka M16A3) is primarily marketed to LEO agencies.
So, while yes, "A3" models exist, there is some debate over whether or not any rifles have ever been roll-marked as "M16A3".)

Not to bad man. Texture could use a little more detail. It looks a little milky(if your understanding what I mean). Pay attention to the edges more and where ware and highlights would be.

Thumb looks a little thin. Its kinda got the M5 syndrome that Jon had prior to his free Beretta92.

Good start all in all but needs some refining to be commercial.

Good luck,
Loc

haha.

Awesome model man, if you ever come out with a pack, I would definitely be interested.

But I honestly can't really tell the difference between the one without shaders, and the one with shaders.

Hey Errant or Keith, do you know what the "button" to the left of the cocking plunger does or is?

Are you talking about the bolt release (on the left, above the magazine well)? The only "button" near "cocking plunger", is the forward assist (but it's on the right).

Do you mean the button that is also a bit like a plunger? (Used to cock on CS:S, if youve ever played)

See attached, I may be of assistance..

The button on the left of the cocking plunger (that is actually attached to it), needs to be pulled back (with the finger), to release the plunger.

The latch on the left of the charging handle locks it to the upper so that it doesn't eat your face. The button to the right is the forward assist. I think it's only used when trying chamber quietly or if the bolt sticks but Keith would know exactly.

Is that what you're asking about?

(LOL 3x cross-post!)

p.s. That M4 in CSS makes me want to gouge my eyes out... It's such a horrible rendition yet it still looks kinda purdy

Update. I've done a bit more on the M16.

-got rid of the arm (will with new one ASAP)
-added a firespot bone (won't put a brass bone, make my own)
-modelled the area on top of the forward hand guard.
-added a point on the forward sight.
-added a rear sight aperture (thanks Errant)
-made an iron sight.

I plan to make about a dozen M16 varients and sell them as a pack. I might make a few varient packs each with different weapons (Ak series, H & K MP5 etc) priced at around £10 $15, sound reasonable?

first screen showing some more detail...

Iron sight (the stupid muzzle gets caught up when you zoom in) I might add a bit more blur around the edges.

The muzzle's there? I thought it hid the gun at a certain point...your gun probally has a larger scale than other FPSC weapons.

The ironsight is too stretched along the X-Axis of the image. Try stretching it in a wee bit, or stretch it up.
Edit: Its a bit transparent, too... You can see the crosshairs just under the aiming "hole"..

Smitho, for some reason scope images are always semi-transparent if you knew how to make them opaque that would be a great help if you tell me

Another screenshot. The fps shows 5 only because I deliberatly slowed down the game (U key) so I could capture the muzzle flash. Fps is normally 31/32...

I have decided. I think I have rushed into creating a thread. My work in progress is still too early. Perhaps when I create more models I will start a new thread. Sorry for starting this thread. Could everyone just ignore it and let it die. Thanks

He wanted rid of this, and Frankly, im not surprised you posted Phlum... You have a nasty habit of bumping old threads, and this case, he didnt want anymore replies or anything.

Try not to bump old threads/no longer wanted threads...
