After too long, i have finished the first character of the fantasy pack i am creating, hoping to be Model Pack 8, and to be used with X10.

Many things after Christmas have been keeping me away from working on the pack, and there is far too much old things Ive still yet to finish.

Well anyway, Here it is:

identical models, one on left is normal mapped

texture and normal map applied:

a nice little pose:

yup, that's pretty much 1 out of a lot, i spent a bit too much time on the normal map of this one, but things are about to speed up a lot. Next creature you can expect finished is the Ogre, shown a while back (though Ive made alterations to pretty much all models to give a more natural stance and figure.)

i have created more character/creature models in advance, its merely a matter of texturing them and creating their higher resolution sculpts.

Any comments, criticism and/or ideas for characters/creatures/entities/segments/scene assets included in the pack are welcome

p.s) im aware of the weird normal map problems at the line of symmetry, just Max playing up.

Looks pretty good Jon. Good luck on it as a x10 pack. Between you and bond there should be some nice packs for that more powerful system. This belongs in 3D Chat though now.

lol

for the past week or two ive signed up to World of WarCraft, which is bloody brilliant, and ive already gotten quite a few ideas from it, as Bond1 said he was making a Minotaur, perhaps i shall convert my idea of a Minotaur into a Tauren instead

but im still putting it out to you guys if you want to suggest anything

edit:

thanks locrian, im hoping it will be available for X10, would make better use of the normal maps, i would prefer it to stay in FPSC boards IF possible, as it is directed towards FPSC users and what they want to request.

I'm very sorry to hear that, since you were going to attempt a spider also, but I'm definitely not going to upgrade to X10. But not all is hopeless, Rolfy is working on some cool spiders, so after he is done, you may be able to focus on some other creature instead.

Will this pack be only for X10? Or will there be perhaps a lower poly model for us lowley XP users.

Amazing model, if this pack works for FPSC V1 then it definitely will be on the top of my To Buy list.

It looks great, you really packed a lot of detail into the normal map. One thing about setting up your UV's, you might want to give EVERYTHING it's own texture space, and hide the seams in the back or some other hidden place. It doesn't look like FPSC is going to correct for mirrored UV's and you'll end up with really weird "inside out" lighting on the normal map. I'm going to have to go back and redo some of my work.

Benjamin, wou won't have to upgrade to X10 to use these. I'm sure Jon will give baked-down texures with all the effects baked into the diffuse.

thanks, i'll have to take that into account with later models, may take longer but atleast i can add more unique details

As Bond1 said, yes there will be a current FPSC version, only using diffuse testures with painted in lighting

Banjamin A, i have finished a spider model, it is yet to be UV Mapped and textured

i'll say again, any suggestions will be taken into account, the following codebox shows the ORIGINAL character/creature list...

so if you have any suggestions, nows your chance to make them clear

thanks for the comments.

Looks great, Jon!

For the sake of the mods sanity, you should really drop that bad boy into fpsc even if un-animated and crappy looking so that this thread doesn't get moved. Otherwise we'll have people whining about double standards again.

thanks, i was having some troubles with alpha channels on the loincloth of this one, whereby i couldnt get it to display with alpha+normal map in the viewport, so my plan for alpha channeled hairy legs on the spider may be out the window, it will most likely work in FPSC though.

thanks for all the nice comments guys!

Jon JON JON JON!!!!

You know everytime i see your work, i wonder why you even try... i mean come ON!!!!! no im absolutely kidding, but on a serious note...

WHY ARNT YOU DOING XBOX360 GAMES?!!! your work looks Oblivion for the 360 quality, if not better, and so few polys, just ditch the fpsc community already and go AAA...

im very dissapointed to see you with such good work still selling to us indi game developers, you should be doing AAA games...atleast thats my opinion

On this model, all i say is, FREAKING TASTIC!

i thought this was a Fantasy pack, why have you listed a Doom creature?
And here's my suggestioni: ringwraiths and nazguls, and maybe the Witch King and his Fellbeast? That'd be class!

thanks Blooddeath666, i apperciate the comments but there is always more to learn, and more to show, hopefully this pack can act as a showcase of my newly normal mapped characters, showing my progress over time to developers. Once i can build a solid portfolio with lots of work of many different time styles, untill i am confident i can work in all areas to a current day or later quality, i will properly apply for some game dev jobs

Quote: "i thought this was a Fantasy pack, why have you listed a Doom creature?

lol, but LOTR characters are alright?

The Imp character in Doom 3 is nothing like an Imp from a fantasy Genre, they only share a name, not characteristics, take the Imp from oblivion as an example, a 'mini demon' with wings if you will.

If i were to create a Fellbeast for the pack, i would most likely class it as a dragon, a Witch King is a possibility but would class as some dark overlord or something alike (remember to stay away from copyright issues)

thanks for your suggestions

@ Benjamin A, thanks for your suggestion

Please post a pic of something in FPSC.I don't really want to move this thread since it is probably going to be part of an official FPSC model pack and I am in a catch 22 situation here...
On one hand it has been pointed out that since there has not been an FPSC ready screenshot posted I should move this to 3D Chat per the rule.
And as the above quote pointed out I (nor any of the other mods) want to go through the double standard thing again.
On the other hand if this is going to be part of an FPSC ready model pack then Jon is probably working out a deal with TGC...and my bosses.
So here is what I am going to do..

I am going to give Jon a chance to post an FPSC screenshot and I am going to contact the powers that be about this as well.
Once I hear back from everybody then I will do something.
Thanks for your understanding.

Awesome work yet again Mr Fletcher - Is that the Nvidia plug in thingy you're using on the normal mapped?
If you were to go along to a designers, and just show them thism you'd have no problems getting in

Hope to see more work from you again, matey!

Jon, you really have put a lot of work on this one!! With so many details it looks wonderful! Just wondering about the glossy look though...is it intentional?

i would see him as a slimy greasy creature who never showers, so i suppose it could be intentional

@ urlforce studios

LOL

here is your screenshot Fred:

FOR TEH LOVE OF GOD DONT JUDGE THE MODEL BY THE FOLLOWING SCREENSHOT, THERE IS NO NORMAL MAP APPLIED, AND TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THIS IS THE COLOR MAP, THIS ISNT EVEN WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE IN THE CURRENT FPSC, THERE IS NO PAINTED IN LIGHTING YET!

Sorry for being a bit loud in the above sentence, but i think bond1 will agree that when you take off a normal map, things go very cruddy

edit:

actually, to clarify, the normal map is showing a very very very tiny bit, which is why you can see some curve on the bicep, and there is some weak specular shine from the bumpcubereflectblabla shader

im using 3d Studio max to create the low poly mesh, also for the UV mapping, and i use Adobe Photoshop to paint textures as well as normal map editing.

I also use Max's render to texture feature to generate normal maps from high polygon models.

Xaque, indeed it is true that practice will return the best results of whatever you are working with, but in some cases, you need the right tools for the job, for instance Photoshop against MS Paint.

use the tools that you feel confident with, there are plenty of free or cheap software packages out there which can do everything ive done so far, they just take time to learn.

Ive finished the high-res of the Ogre model, however im taking some time to work on my entry for the Dominance War 2, that of which i shall be joining the polycount team. so far i have spent several days already concepting the character, and have settled on a design

just browsing the internet viewing other peoples work, practicing and researching techniques is pretty much what i did then and now, there are plenty of tutorials on the internet, and once youve got down with the basics and learned the interface of the program your using its up to you to secure your workflow

ofcourse thats just how i see it, but the main message is the usual "practice again and again"

@bond1

heh, thanks

i seriously doubt i'll be much up against industry professionals but it will no doubt teach me something in the process and will be alot of fun
