You can use gameSpaceLight from Caligari, it's free and you can export to .x format with animation. The polygons are limited to 648 (I think). Good luck.

I forgot to tell you that you can also use JTEdit,it's free. If you want to use this, it does not work with windows 98, or windows 98SE.

http://www.jtgame.com/jtedit/jteditmain.html

and you can find gameSpaceLight here, it is also free:

This 2 are compatible with DarkBasic Classic.

I like to use Anim8or because it's free and pretty easy to use for a novice. Unfortunatelly it cannot export animations.
It can export to 3DS format which can be used in DBC, however exporting to 3DS sometimes distorts the models a little so what I do is I export my models to Wavefront Format(*.OBJ) first in Anim8or, then I use Wings 3D (which is also free but not as user friendly for me as Anim8or) to export the model to 3DS and then I use the application DBCONV.EXE to export the model to .X format. Using this method I have been able to get good results.

If you've got the money then Cinema 4D is a spectacular program. It's quite expensive, but it really is great and very very easy to learn!

try caligari truespace 3.2. also free, and unlike gamespace lite, there is no polygon limit, and as far as i know, it can export animations (although i haven't gotten around to making an animated model yet). for simple levels and worlds, i use deled lite (free from www.delgine.com)
