i am trying to texture a sphere, not with anything major at the moment, just a simple smiley face. however, where should i position the facial features on the bitmap in order to get them looking alright when I load it into dbpro and texture a sphere with it?

A sphere UV mapped for ya. there is an example picture to show you the front and the back. You need to paint on the picture that is not the example. COOL..

Look up UV Mapping in google, when texturing objects, you dont just draw on a bitmap and hope the features go where you want, you do a process called UV Mapping that creates a 2D image of all of the faces of your model, and you then draw over that image. Look for uv maps in google to get an idea of what they tend to look like.

Just to add to that, there are several styles of UV mapping. Some software 'projects' a texture on to the faces and assigns the UV coordinates automatically. Others 'unfold' the model allow you to paint on the texture map.

Examples of projections include planar, cylindical, and spherical mapping usually along one of the three major axis. From what I've seen, unfolded UV texture maps are more common with character models while simple objects have textures projected on to them. Of course, either method can be applied to the other style of model.
