When I try to compile any code I get this error message:

It means nothing to me. Can anyone shed any light on it?

It happens when I try to compile any code. I have tried it with BlueIDE and with CodeSurge but they both produce the error, so, I assume it is the compiler at fault.

I recently upgraded to 6.4 but have been able to compile since then. I was doing some Photoshop work whist the compiler did its thing and then I got this error.
The first thing I tried was a reboot. I got the blue screen teling me there was a problem with one of my hard drives. It was an external drive that wasn't in use. So, after allowing windows to check it I turned it off and rebooted again. Still got the error message. So, I ran a repair of th 6.4 update ... no joy!

It has come at the worst possible time with only a week left to finish my compo entry and this weekend is perhaps the only time I can work on it.

[Edit] I have just done a complete uninstall / install and updated to 6.4 again but I still get the same error message. That really was my last hope!

[Edit 2]Perhaps not my last hope ... I will now try an uninstall / install but only upgrade as far as 6.3 but since 6.4 has worked for me it is a very small hope.

Can anyone offer any help?

Thanks

Do you have any other machines available you could run it on? I've got DBP on my laptop as well as on my PC - just in case my wife wants to use the PC ...

Could it be a memory fault in the PC itself?

Edit: do previously compiled programs still run OK?

I have a laptop that is actually better spec than my desktop. However, it has a graphics card (I think) problem that causes it to crash a lot. That's if it even turns on in the first place. It is in dire need of repair and I am now seriously upset at not having done it earlier!

As for previously compiled programs ... yes they run fine.

You have been extremely generous to forum members with your time and your creations. If anyone deserves an extension to accomodate this disaster you certainly do. I really wish I could help.

Thanks Jeff But I am not asking for and I don't want an extension. If I have to submit my game as it is then so be it. Of course, I would much rather fix this problem and then finish my game.

I just tried to uninstall DBP again but it won't let me. I am told that it is in use my another process. So I rebooted and tried again ... same thing. So, I rebooted to safe mode but that failed at the first hurdle. I wouldn't boot past ntoskern and yet it has just done normal boot (apparantly) fine but still tells me DBP is in use!

There is clearly something very wrong with my PC but I don't know what it is. Does the error message point to anything?

I'd second that - but I'm sure you'd would much rather not have to resort to that.

More constructively, do you still have a clean working copy of your game? It's been a while since I checked the various entries - but yours stood out as being one of the few that looked like a complete game. I know you want to add various improvements - but then so does everyone. Don't be dismayed if you can't add the last few "bells and whistles".

Sorry I can't help you with this particular problem - it's certainly beginning to look horrible.

Try to get hold of a clean back-up copy ASAP and put it in a safe place - or several, if possible.

Good luck!

Run chkdsk on your drive - you may have cross-linked files. It doesn't happen often, but NTFS does sometimes get its knickers in a twist.

Well I had the same message a couple months ago but no blue screen. My computer crashed not too long after. I ended up reinstalling xp and dbpro and it worked fine. This is probably a last resort though seeing as i had to do it because my computer crashed (luckily i wasnt working on any projects!). Thats all I have I hope I help

If I remember rightly, you can not use add/remove from control panel to remove DBPro as you always get that in-use message.

However, if you re-run the upgrade exe, you get a choice of install, repair or uninstall. The uninstall option should work fine.

Ive had that happen to me before Scraggle and IIRC its actually a programming error. I think I remember it having to do with arrays, and me trying to pass incorrect values to them, (no it wasnt the incompattible variable error, it was what scraggle is getting). But then if you havent been able to compile ANYTHING then I dont see what the problem could be, unless you've lost a dll.

Really, I recognize that exact error, I just cant remember how I fixed it, I suppose this has been useless then .

It could possibly be a programming error - I've managed to make the compiler crash before just because of the code. Maybe that says something about my coding.

lol benjamin.

i know GG has already offered Scraggle, but if you need someone to compile your code i'd be happy to do it.

would be a slow way to develop lol ("ok, was the menu button in the right spot?"), but you said you were almost done anyway.

This is a long shot, but it's worth a try. Some versions of windows come with a system file checker. Try typing this into the run bar:

sfc /scannow

Thanks guys.

I think I can rule out a coding error because it happens with all my projects. Even a 'Hello World' project I created to test it.

I suspect it may be faulty RAM. Explorer has started mis-behaving today. Saying it couldn't write to blah address and then closing all the windows. It seems fine after a reboot but then dies again after some random interval.

Photoshop is still OK (for now), so I have been making a 'How to Play' screen. Which I will post in the WIP thread for folk to read before trying the demo.

Thanks for the offer Peter but like you said ... a bit slow.

I phoned my boss this morning and he is happy for me to install DBP on a virtual machine at work and then stay behind at night. Not ideal but it should get the job done.

[Edit] @ Crit ... thanks but it failed.

Delete everything in the DB Pro temp folder.
Delete any dbso files in the project folder.
Delete any files created by a crash in the project folder.

If all of that fails, create a new project directory. Copy all of the non-source files across. Copy and paste the source files into brand new files in your new folder.

It's worked for me in the past.

I am almost 100% sure it is problem with your memory, I had this before with same issues. I bugged my memory until even Windows98 could not start anymore, because HIMEM tried to use part of my memory stick which was corrupted. I was broke back then and could not even allow myself to buy a new mem stick, so I had to use MS-DOS (with Volcov Commander which is a free alternative of Norton Commander) to play some old DOS games until I updated my PC. I guess these are bad news for you...

is your pc set up with more than one stick of memory

e.g. 2 x 512mb modules?

you could try taking one out and seeing if it still happenes
its not likely that the corruption is in both modules.

yes, try what Pricey suggested, then you will still be able to work just with smaller ram amount tho.

I can't believe I didn't think of that before, especially as I had deduced that it was probably a RAM problem! I was actually trying to find a way to convince the other half to let me buy more RAM.

I took one out ... same problem, put it back in again and took out the other and so far so good, I am able to compile again!

I have lost most of the weekend and I am not sure when I will be able to find time to work on my game now but at least I have something. There will now have to be a few sacrifices to make the deadline but I should be able to provide a working version.

Thank you to everyone that offered suggestions
