The Winners

This month everyone's a Winner....due to 2 entries that were never re-uploaded. So congratulations all around.

Here's the order:

1st Place: Avenging Eagle with Hidden Agenda....145 pts.

- "Lots of lag in the vents, liked breaking the windows to cross over to other building, the fire was placed good and the scenery was placed nicely. the stair well blockage with wire fencing was a good touch. Good use of audio to help the game play along. I enjoyed playing this level."

2nd Place: Benjamin with Spiderz....141 pts.

- "This is the usual quality of work I have come to expect from Ben. The only issue I really had were the spiders themselves.IMO they were way to hard to kill (or put to sleep,as Ben would probably rather me put it).I died quite a few times because I ran into a spider, couldn't get away and had to dump nearly two clips of ammo into each one (while they were chewing on me) to bring one down.
While I do enjoy a challenge it seemed like every spider was akin to a boss battle and it got tedious for me after a while."

-"Nice touch with the comic book style storyline, over done with the grey scale I would have like to see more color beside damage hits. Color could be used when saving a person, or when the medic healed. The spyders kept showing through walls and getting stuck so it was to easy to kill them. I liked this level and it took the longest to finish."

3rd Place: Jenkins with Rise of the Furries....117 pts.

- "Mixture of textures inconsistant in beginning (concrete wall right against scifi wall), stock menu system used which lost quite a few points. At the end could not enter last teleport to exit level. But, with all the above this was a fun level to play and I liked seeing some of the free models from around the forums in game play. I like the teleport to the final enemy and the bright textures worked in this area. The boss character (father) did not move so it was too easy to take him out."

- "This was unique and fun to play but it is obvious who has more experience with FPSC.This is a great effort but is plagued with several problems...there was the "wall glitch" present (where a wall is placed and it flashes with the texture of another wall that is placed in the same spot.Enemy AI wasn't really terrific. There was a model near the beginning of the level that didn't have a texture.
Possibly the most damning (or is it "darning?" to fall within the AUP...lol) glitch came at the very end of the level where you had to step through the teleporter after killing your father...then go to the next teleporter to (I assume) end the level.
I say "I assume" because every time I tried to go from the "after you kill your dad" teleporter to the "station" teleporter the game got stuck.
Why the "after you kill you dad" teleporter wasn't the end of the level is beyond me.
A decent effort. With time and experience in using FPSC I am sure we are going to see some high quality work from Jenkins.
Kudos on the effort to make the weapons and enemies feel unique by trying to retexture them and the post-apocalyptic feeling you get when you play the level is pretty cool as well."

Congratulations again to all who entered and won. Thanks to everyone for participationg over the past few months in all the competitions; as well as those prize donors out there...couldn't have done it without all of you. I think this was a good experience for everyone in growing their skills and knowledge of FPSC; I wish TGC would have taken more of an interest.

I am now officially done supporting this competition; see you around.

congratulations to everyone

I am going to download all the game right now and have a look

aww Keith, sad to see you stop with this. You did a great job with all the competitions!!

edit : okay, I played them all. Here are my honest views.

1. AE
I had framerates of 3-8 fps throughout, only sometimes hovering in the 20-26 range. But I guess thats FPSC fault, so can't blame you completely though.
The game start, menu, sounds, voices were very very professional! I gave up when I reached the fire (I was getting 0-1 fps then). But till then the few things I noticed amazed me.
a) the wall edges were rounded, great job there
b) the linear flow of the level was very well disguised!
c) excellent textures on everything!!

2. Ben
Nice job again. It seems you have learnt how to tame FPSC best. Even with such an open level (you could see almost everything from every point due to windows), I had very good framerates!!
It had a nice involving story to go with the game.
What I liked best though was the level design. It looked and felt very very urban!! Good job.

3. Jenkins
Nice to see you put a lot of effort in this. But to be honest, you should see other people's levels to learn the art of level design. You had 10 different textures in the same area. There were great detailed textures mixing with some comic type ones. Also almost every turn and corner had Z flickering.
About the gameplay, well...I felt all I was doing was opening doors. And most of the doors were pointless. Why would you have doors at every turn?
Also, when I was on the roof, I just climbed on to the walls, and I could see the terrain below (which I could have jumped off). Try your best to hide/conceal parts of a level you do not intent the player to go to.

I am sorry to all of you, but these were honest reviews.
Congratulations to all of you for winning, although it would have been great to see some more competition.

Good luck with your game dev!

Congrats everyone! To bad there were only a few entries this time, while the theme was pretty good.

Thanks Keith and all others who have supported this contest for the past months!

Guess the biggest questions is now if it worth all the effort to keep it going..... especially knowing that TGC still refuses to back the competition up and entries are getting less and less.

Finally! I've was dying to know who won! Congratulations to all. I hope someone takes up the mantle and keeps the contest going. I think with the holidays and the NVidia contest, it was just too overwhelming for much participation. I'd like to see another go at it. Maybe AE can still post his idea for the next contest and see if anyone wants to run with it. Again, congratulations!

I never had any problems with that.

lol, I don't know why I did all those doors.

I had a lot less time on this than ya'll though. I got grounded for bad grades (stupid geometry, I failed it.)

I'm glad you're being honest though.
Quote: "

I don't know why it kept doing that. No matter where I put that darned thing it would get me stuck.

Also one thing to add, I already have signs 4.

Wow! I'm...amazed!!

I really didn't think this level would get anything above 3rd place when i entered it. Thanks Judges for your votes, and thanks to the community for all your feedback.

I have some questions:
1) Who do i talk to about my prizes?

2) Shall i run next Month's competition?

I'm kind of afraid to download Avengings, lol. The words "lots of lag" freaks me out. I will probably get like 1 frame rate. Congratulations AE and Ben.

Although my level still wasn't amazing, I think I did better than last month. So I'm proud as I stand.

Anyone (of the winners) who wants the OG WWII Pack, and still doesn't have it, may contact Just One Old Man over at the OG Forums for it. If you don't want it, it will go back into the pool; there will be no giving it to anyone else (due to a past incident on our forums over it).

For all other prizes, contact the prize donor (unless they contact you first.

As far as who runs the competition from now on....that's on you guys.

GRRRRR!!! It's not the fact that I lost points that makes me angry, it's the fact that I spent like an hour and a half working on the loading screen. Which gives the entire background story, and I forgot to assign that as the loading screen, lol. All that menu stuff was custom, but I forgot to assign them. That is soooo lame. Oh well.

Just curious, which model and where is it, doesn't have any texture. I never found it.

Can someone tell me the difference between ECS Lite and ECS Pro?

And question about the store script. I'm not good with all this website stuff. But uhhhh, does it matter if I'm making a website through freewebs.com or not?

I made a decal.

...or the more complex version:

1) I made a TV, with a screen. Cut the screen out so you could see the decal (the aspect ratio of the screen was 4:3).
2) I made a simple scene in FPSC, lit it, added entites and tested it. I took a screenshot of my scene.
3) Next, i edited the screenshot, desaturating it (making it black and white).
4) I burnt the image to a CD
5) I used my DVD player to display the screenshot on the TV.
6) I set up my camera (oh how i love that camera) and filmed the TV screen as a mucked about with the scart cable, creating interferance (lines, colour changes etc). I shot it in 4:3 at 25FPS.
7) I captured the footage on my computer, a edited it down to 16 frames long, using power director (4).
8) Next, i took screenshots of every frame in my edited footage and saved them to a seperate folder. The screenshots were 320x240, holding the 4:3 ratio
9) I then made a black square 1280x1280 (320 x 4 = 1280). I opened up all my screenshots and placed then very carefully onto the black square. I made sure to compensate for the 240 by placing them 40 pixels from the top (320 - 240 = 80, 1/2 = 40).
10) When all the images had been placed, i knew that the black background would be seen, so i applied an alpha channel to my decal to mask the black, making only the footage visible.
11) I made a new decal by stealing bits and places (meshes and fpe scripts) from Benge Sprite pack. I change the texture to my decal (camera 7.dds) and remembered to copy across the "decalspec.txt" so my image could be divided up into it's 16 frames.
11) I carefully placed the decal inside the TV, then tested and teaked it until i got the right position and right scale to fit inside the TV.
12) Finally, i added a flicker light just in front of the TV, to give the impression that it's flickering picture is actually flickering.

And there you have it.

As far as I know freewebs.com doesn't support PHP. I don't think that you can use a freewebs.com website unless I am wrong.
