I have been using AC3D for all of my modeling thus far and, although it's great software for making static models, it cannot animate or make limbs, so I tried downloading Blender, but I'm having problems with it.

When I export a Blender file to .3ds and try to use it in a DBPro file, it causes my program to crash. And, although I have seen references in this forum to using Blender to export to the .x file format (which is what I have been using with AC3D), it looks like the current Blender version doesn't support the .x file format. Does anyone know if there is an add-on for Blender that lets me export to .x or why the .3ds files aren't working in DBPro? Or, for that matter, if there's other free software that I can use?

Blender supports .x files. You must activate this ...
File -> User preferences ... -> Categories:Import-Export
Here you can activate .x-fileformat and dont't forget to save this changes (Save User Settings).

DBPro doesn't support .3ds any more. The format is too varied so they dropped it, but kept the references to supporting it.

But a lot of 3DS still work in DB Pro. I haven't had one that doesn't work. I don't use Blender however.

That will be sheer luck though. I use blender and.x files exclusively.

Ah, great, I activated the preference. Now I just need to... learn how to use Blender.

3d chat board here is a good resource as well, a few of us use blender extensively and have answered a lot of common questions/issues in using it for dbpro. may need to dig through the threads a bit but there is good info and help

Make sure you give all of your objects materials, as well as applying textures in the UV editor. You will know what I am talking about the after watching the basic lessons.

Thanks for the links. I bookmarked them.

I do all of my texturing in AC3D. Those should still be good once I import them into Blender, right? At the moment I'm trying to UV map my weightlifter. It's a bit slow going, so I'd hate to have to do it all over from scratch.

When you import, usually the UV maps are retained. You will need to reassign the textures themselves which should not be difficult.
