So I’m working on Swordfight again, and now I’m determined to finish it. But the naming is going to be a little different: Swordfight is the name of the prototype (pretty much a demo of the combat), but the final game (which will have a story, among other things) will be called The Killer.
Story:
You play as a man named Baranog, who wakes up at the entrance to a cave. He has a head injury and he can’t remember the past decade or so of his life. As he wanders around looking for any signs of civilization, he is attacked by an assassin. It turns out that he’s been targeted by a whole gang of assassins, and he goes on a quest to find out why. His memory comes back to him through numerous, often quite horrific, dream sequences. In the final and most horrific dream sequence, he learns how he received his head injury and came to be at the entrance of a cave.
Gameplay:
The combat in Swordfight/The Killer will be like Oblivion, except with a 3rd person camera that isn’t a piece of crap. You move the mouse to look around and use WASD to move (like in an FPS). You left click to attack and right click to parry (like in Oblivion), but you have to be pointing at the correct body part (like in the very early version of Swordfight I made a few months ago). Every now and then you’ll pick a special attack, such as “Trip”, which is activated by the middle mouse button or (for those whose mouse lacks a middle button) the C key.
In terms of plot and character interaction, The Killer will be like Neverwinter Nights or Mass Effect (i.e. tons of moral decisions and deep philosophical discussions). I’ll try to make the dialogue as interesting and engaging as possible, so it won’t just be the two characters standing there like statues as you click through the cheesy text bubbles, like in Neverwinter Nights.
Spoilers for those who care:
Something that is revealed early in the game:
Baranog was going to be married, but his fiancé was killed
by an assassin. As part of an elaborate scheme to get revenge, he
became an assassin himself. His plan was that, when he became a
skilled enough killer, he would find out who killed his fiancé and
then exact his revenge.
A major spoiler, only read if you REALLY want to:
As an assassin, Baranog had a partner, and during their time
killing together they became friends. When he found out who killed
his fiancé, it turned out to be his partner. So he had a decision
to make: he MUST NOT kill his friend, but he also MUST avenge his
fiancé. You’ll have to wait to play the game to see which he
chose. Whatever he did, it caused him to lose his memory and fall
unconscious in front of a cave. When he wakes up, the game begins.
My current task is to finish the 3d character object. Right now, I'm finishing up the mesh, and I plan to be working on the texture sometime next week. I've never textured anything so complex, so I have no idea how long it'll take. Once I've finished that and the animations, I'll get to work on the 3 levels that are going to be in Swordfight (which will be easy compared to the character). Then I'll finally get to coding! My goal is to be done before the year is.
Swordfight! My cheesy little first game!
