So I’m working on Swordfight again, and now I’m determined to finish it. But the naming is going to be a little different: Swordfight is the name of the prototype (pretty much a demo of the combat), but the final game (which will have a story, among other things) will be called The Killer.

Story:
You play as a man named Baranog, who wakes up at the entrance to a cave. He has a head injury and he can’t remember the past decade or so of his life. As he wanders around looking for any signs of civilization, he is attacked by an assassin. It turns out that he’s been targeted by a whole gang of assassins, and he goes on a quest to find out why. His memory comes back to him through numerous, often quite horrific, dream sequences. In the final and most horrific dream sequence, he learns how he received his head injury and came to be at the entrance of a cave.

Gameplay:
The combat in Swordfight/The Killer will be like Oblivion, except with a 3rd person camera that isn’t a piece of crap. You move the mouse to look around and use WASD to move (like in an FPS). You left click to attack and right click to parry (like in Oblivion), but you have to be pointing at the correct body part (like in the very early version of Swordfight I made a few months ago). Every now and then you’ll pick a special attack, such as “Trip”, which is activated by the middle mouse button or (for those whose mouse lacks a middle button) the C key.

In terms of plot and character interaction, The Killer will be like Neverwinter Nights or Mass Effect (i.e. tons of moral decisions and deep philosophical discussions). I’ll try to make the dialogue as interesting and engaging as possible, so it won’t just be the two characters standing there like statues as you click through the cheesy text bubbles, like in Neverwinter Nights.

Spoilers for those who care:

Something that is revealed early in the game:

A major spoiler, only read if you REALLY want to:

My current task is to finish the 3d character object. Right now, I'm finishing up the mesh, and I plan to be working on the texture sometime next week. I've never textured anything so complex, so I have no idea how long it'll take. Once I've finished that and the animations, I'll get to work on the 3 levels that are going to be in Swordfight (which will be easy compared to the character). Then I'll finally get to coding! My goal is to be done before the year is.

Sounds awesome. Can't wait to play this when you finish. I expect it to be a great game. So, good luck, I'll be following this...

Thanks, Happy Cheesecake. Right now, I'm working on the character's head. He still needs teeth, eyes, and ears, and the general shape of the head needs some tidying up (especially the nose). But it's getting there.

I've done some work on the head's general shape, and I'm actually quite happy with it. Now he just needs teeth, eyes, and ears.

The second pic definitely seems more defined than the first, but I reckon its still got a bit you could do to it. How much detail are you going to put into it?

I'm going to give it a normal map once it's all textured, so I can afford to be a little lazy with the "detail work" on the mesh itself. What I'm really working on is proportion. I'm actually using high resolution renders of the "Make Human" mesh (which is a very realistic mesh) as a reference image for the rest of the body. It certainly isn't finished, not by a long shot, and I'm actually going to post in the "3D Chat" section of the forum as soon as I make the teeth, eyes, and ears.

Well, he's got ears now. Next up is the eyes!

I've almost finished the eyes, and once they're done I'll post another screen. I'm also going to be using this head in my entry for the Halloween 3D competition (if I get it done in time). I've never made anything with this many polygons before, so it'll take me a while to do the texture.

Thanks! I hope to have a WIP thread for "Swordfight" going before the end of the year. My goal is to finish "The Killer" sometime next year. I'm going to take a break after I finish Swordfight so that I can finally play Fallout 3, and then there shouldn't be anything standing between me and finishing the game!

The eyes are done! The teeth should be a breeze by comparison.

Thanks! I've done quite a bit more work on him, in fact I've finished the geometry (for now). I've already started the UV mapping, but it's turning out to be the most hellish UV job I've ever attempted.

If all goes well, there'll be a thread in "3D Chat" by the end of the week.
