Hi all
I am intending to create a game type of LOTR:FOTR for PC.
A game in which the player has a certain amount of companions and they are attacked by hordes of enemies.
All this should take place from 3rd person prespective.

What game engines do you guys recomend?

Well considering you don't know a good game engine already I think you're new to game making so I suggest starting simple (like pong or something). But if you really want to know then I would suggest Dark GDK if you want really fast results and aren't looking for the best graphics. And I recommend Unity3d if you want better graphics but spend more time on it.

FPS Creator isn't going to get you anywhere when it comes to stuff like this. For a complex game like the one you mentioned there is no pre-made engine... You have to program it yourself in your language of choice, and to get at a level you're capable of doing so will take longer then a few weeks... Probably more around about a year or so.

yes, this will take some time. It took me around a year to finish and understand the DarkBASIC language and another six months to get everything else I didn't learn from the beginners guide.

I do suggest using DarkBASIC pro to program your game. If you want to use a more professional language I suggest c++/visual basic and directx/Dark GDK.

yep sorry bud, you're gonna have to spend a lot of time learning to code before you can make something like that.
I have a folder full of game ideas I can't make yet and I've been using DB for about 6 years! You could get to my level in half the time though if you really wanted to.
You'll probably laugh at this thread once you're experienced and making your own games.

Well I would recommend Darkbasic Professional as it is powerful and quick in making a game the size of LOTR. It is no easy feat though and I have been in development of a hack n slash for over a year now with just the level 1 characters fighting each other. I am the designer, but my excellent friend Chris (programmer) is showing me how exactly it would require for each method and loop to accomplish such tasks as character movement, life, and etc.

Best of luck to you though.

Edit: I had a website for the game not 2 weeks ago, but the free web host folded and haven't had the time to re-set one up. Let me find the link for my old thread http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=124414&b=19
