ok so i have a setting that takes place in the far future on an inhabited planet that was colonized by humans for about 200 years Now that umans on this planet did not have any contact with earth or any other colony. also because of a huge war between the native race and humans, the humans were pretty much bombed into the stoneage so they rebuilt their civilization but now they use technology similar to 1920-1930 type stuff since thats all tey are capable of manufaturing. So i was thinking in this kind of setting what would the human inhabitants of the planet listel to as music. I was thinking of using actual 1920-30 type music to complete the atmosphere to play in bars and stuff but that music proboly most likeley does not exist. Infact in my world proboly anything from earth is an insane and ultra rare antique (stuff that was brought on the colony ship a long time ago)

so i am just trying to figure out what type of music people in that kind of setting would listen to?

PS

there should be a clear difference in music people listen to in big cities and countryside. I already decided the countryside will listen to mostly guitar-like music, but i have one big city in my world inhabited by humans, so i have trouble deciding what kind of music would people listen to

Music with weird sounding synths and electronic noises as a guess if this is the future, but then that sounds very un-1920 Or maybe psychadelic anti-war stuff, after the war that happened?

At the end of the day though they can listen to whatever you want them to because there isn't exactly going to be a right or wrong answer, with the whole setting being your creation in the first place.

what would be cool is have a sean where a liilt kid in all the war finds a tape player with a tape in it of modern music, then this kid brings it to the new planet.

i was thinking of an idea that humans manages to save some jimmy hendrix and stuff, altho i want to expand on the idea. I had this idea of urbanmusic people would listen is made of these rythmic static sounds created by radio equipment and in that world radio equipment is quite common especially in the city.

Star wars bar music would fit...

The question itself is very challenging. Although even thrown to the stone age, the music is so deep into the culture that it could not totally dissapear.

If a totally new reborn has happened, then the initial music would come from that of the surrounding nature, the animals, the waves of the ocean, the rhythm of falling rain... The sounds of that distant world.

well they dint get literally bombed into the stone age. They had stuff like robots, lasers, a spaceship, mechs, when they first arrived. but during the war the natives of the planet pretty much targeted mostly the advanced technology humans had and they played their cards so well that nearly all advanced technology was destroyed along with all the documentation. most of the factories were also destroyed. the natives also suffered a huge blow in that war so by the end of the war they had hard time to orgonize any kind of effective offence. Humans has no power or rsourses or knowledge to rebuild all the advance tech so instead they started building primivie war technology like crappy tanks and crappy guns, it was cheap and fast to manufacture and it just gave humans the edge to keep control of whatever they had left over from the war so thats how pretty much all of the technology ended up being on the level of early 20th century. now i am not sure if there was any kind of music thehumans brought over from earth it would proboly be some music that would be from year 2500AD in earth years. altho the current events in my game are about 200 years after humans arrived at the planet so the original earth music might just be out of style or something

Morcilla is right, they would be influenced by music from Earth.

Well, if they have had it so bad, then they will be probably playing the blues, lol.

Another point is the air of the atmosphere and its composition. Since the sound and the music is just the vibrating air, well, same cause of sounds can sound different in different atmospheres.
Think about the chipmunk voice when inhaling helium...
Just some thoughts, I guess you can also consider that the air is 99% equal to the Earth's air

thats interesting, alto the air onthe planet is different and its harder for humans to breathe but its survivable all it does is make you more tired and wear you out faster also the lifespan of humans is shorter because of it but some wealthier people can buy these breathing masks that help them

Blues and Jazz is what you want. Maybe some early rock music too. I would suggest either making the music yourself or hiring someone to do it for you, buying the music from people that sell to anyone normally ends up badly, uncreative etc.

yeah i agree, blues sounds like the kind of music people would listen to. i am playing around with a midi creator right now and just getting ideas and stuff, but i will eventually hire someone proboly, i have a friend that can write music so he can proboly help me out too

Well, it is a resource, and sometimes there can be good themes.

So, you can also dig the internet for music packs with all-purpose license (you can do whatever you want with the music once buyed):

I did some time ago a little google search with 'space music pack' and here are a couple of sites:

I think you should look into some classical style march music. I know it's not futuristic or other-worldly, but if most of the planet is going to have been involved in war for a long time, I would think the music would be affected by what they have been doing. Plus, I think it would be neat to leave a rural area where people might only be able to afford a guitar or two (folk, old school blues) and when you walk into this large city with people running around everywhere, Flight of the Valkyries is blaring out of street speakers.

Radio is also going to have a huge impact on what people listen to and if the radio is influenced by a a military government, then it would make sense that the music being played would be what their military marching bands would be playing.

yea, military marching bands is one of the things that inspired me as well, like for example 1920-1940 soviet military music. I might mix in something like for verietys sake

If they where bombed into the stone age, think about what type of instruments people in that predicament would be able to create, I am thinking an industrial sounding backdrop, lots of beating on metal and cat gut (old violins and guitars, sitars, etc) sounding strings, with more brass than woodwinds. If there where lyrics I think people in that situation would be torn between remembering the devastation and asking for hope or help or both. Just a personal opinion is that I'm not sure people that far in the future even under the given conditions would be producing a "swing" type sound. I think you could do a lot of good with contradicting visual and audio stimulus. (1930's visuals with Carlos Santana music?)
