I'm working on an eCommerce website and though the front-end design isn't my main concern, I would like it to have a somewhat pleasing appearance to users. The first link is to a functional design, I'd also like to know if the type of menu I'm using would "annoy" anyone who's trying to browse a site like amazon or newegg.

This other link is to a modified version of the design used above. I'm fairly happy with this one so far, some have already told me it just has too much blue.

The graphical designs are still a work in progress as is the commerce library im writing.

I like it man, as you said the graphical designs are a WIP but see if you can change the title font? Its a bit insipid.

Other than that, solid, proffesional work.

I also find the lime green one infinitely better than the second one

I like the blue

And cool use of AJAX on the sidebar by the way. I thought you were using Flex for a second.

it's technically not even Ajax. All menu items are present, just hidden. I'm using the accordian function from mootools. My only concern with mootools is the 240kb javascript size.

Ok, so that's 1 for green and 1 for blue. And I'll look at adjusting the title.

I like blue, but I sorta think it could go without the blue background, or maybe a paler blue perhaps?

Isn't mootools itself an AJAX API?

I think so Jeku.

I love the menu, it's just that you should find a way to make the menu buttons appear more "clickable" to users. Having a text highlight mouse cursor when clicking a button isn't always the best ya' know?

The design seems a little "Paint"-erly if you get my drift. Try spicing it up a bit with reflections on text such as "New Products" and giving it a more 2.0 look perhaps.

What sells the items in your case is most probably the website in itself, you want to make the users feel at home there. A great design usually means a great staff. (Or a crappy one with alot of money, ha.)

The text cursor on the menus only appears to be in FF. The other browsers supported the CSS cursor.

When I added the doctype, all but IE and Opera ignored break tags with forward slash: </br>
Technically, you need the slash for the tag to be XHTML compliant, so FF and safari failed that one.

Should be <br/> or <br />, not </br>. That is why you probably had problems.

Oh duh, I feel like a retard now, thanks spooky.

I made some updates to both the green and blue designs.

I've also worked on an image management system to deliver product images at whatever size and format I need. If anyone is familiar with Adobe Scene7 (it's what amazon uses) that's the type of system I'm designing. I just have to figure out a way to cache the images.
