You should (if possible) try to make a program that imports decals and exports separate images for each frame, because that would be cool. And It saves time having to extract each frame from the image and putting it in the direct centre of the image.

My mistake, I just realised what you mean

Quote: "You should (if possible) try to make a program that imports decals and exports separate images for each frame, because that would be cool. And It saves time having to extract each frame from the image and putting it in the direct centre of the image."

You mean an app that'll take the frames from an existing decal and turn them into seperate images?
If you do then I'll give it a go

Also just to let you all know, this is not intended to convert movies/films into decals it has been built for videos built by you lot that you build to be made into decals.
If you do try and convert a movie/film then you will be disappointed as 99% of the time the black backgrounds are not 100% black therefore meaning the transparency does not work.

How long is your video and which smoothness setting are you using?
Make sure the video is not shorter than the smoothness setting time.

Don't you mean add them on to make the video longer?
Just set the smoothness setting to a lower time.

Video that is 1-2 seconds long = 8 FPS Smoothness
Video that is 2-4 seconds long = 4 FPS Smoothness
Video that is greater than 4 seconds long = 2 FPS Smoothness

You shouldn't have a problem with your video being too long as you just change the smoothness setting.

Nevermind at least it works now

Quote: "Is there a way to change the scale of the decals?"

Just change the size of your video resolution.
It makes the decal size the same size as the frames so the larger the frames the larger the decal.
I can add a scaling option if you like, although it may pixelate it when you scale it bigger.

Thank you very much

Quote: "will there be any more updates or do you think this is good as a final?"

It's up to you lot, if you want me to add more then I will.
Just make your requests and if I can do it then I'll add it to the app.

Is that colour transparency or black/grey transparency.
Also make sure you've made the video and it's got a solid black background and not dark grey or dark blue etc..

I'll have a look through the app tomorrow for you

It was made in adobe aftereffects so there is some distortion of the background, but, for the most part, the background is eliminated.

Excellent idea and works well. I was thinking that it would make decals from a video... as in select the frames you want to use. The way it's set up you just about have to create your own video, unless I'm missing something. That being the case, I would like it better if you could select still images and cut out the video all together.

I've been playing with decals lately and a lot of time is taken up just setting up the 4x4 image, so this will be a great time saver.

Thanks for taking the time and sharing with us.

I agree.Decals by hand are a pain.I think you need to be able to import images to make decals with also.
I am sure the FPSC community appreciates this as do I.

Unless I am mistaking you, isn't that exactly what Airslide's decal maker does for you.
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=118295&b=24
Personally I have not had a lot of angst with setting up 4x4 and using grid/snap, select all, and using the move tool to drag over the image into your 4x4, in photoshop its just a question of dragging and dropping, no real sweat.

Nice little app you have here, just I am not sure if creating an avi movie and then grabbing frames to create the decal makes sense.
Decals have 16frames, does your app grab every nth frame?, four seconds of avi at 25frames per sec does mean a lot of space between frames, how does this look?
Also if your going to use Particle illusion as you seem to be in your other thread its best to learn how to loop your movie using layers (very simple method) for decals rather than trying to loop the particles themselves for what amounts to a 16frame (less than .5sec) animation. Unless you are grabbing from a movie you didnt make, then your kinda walking on thin ice, why output an avi and convert to frames when you can just output the frames?
Not trying to argue here, I like what your trying to do, just not sure if I understand the logic behind it.

I am much more interested in your screen blocks idea, which would make decals redundant anyways, 16frames of animation is so limited, decals are useful for anything which really doesnt require too many frames, but thats it.

I'll add it in then

@Crusader2: I've got an idea that could solve your problem, I'll add it in then post it.

@rolfy: I see where you're coming from and here's my answer:
I've made it so you can make a decal from a video so the people who arent't good at animating 16 static images so they animate smoothly can just open a video maker and then make the video they want in there.

This isn't just for videos made with Particle Illusion, Adobe AfterEffects etc..

Quote: "Decals have 16frames, does your app grab every nth frame?, four seconds of avi at 25frames per sec does mean a lot of space between frames, how does this look?"

Have you downloaded and used it?
You can select the 'distance' between each frame by selecting the smoothness, you can have it at 2, 4 or 8.
It uses the first # amount of seconds the video which can also be changed by setting the smoothness.

We could never get it to work. Looking back at the thread however, I see that it did create the 4x4 so that's a plus.

Yes, it's the movie thing that seems like more work than creating the decal itself. The benefit of these 3rd party programs has always been their ability to do things quickly and easily, saving people the hassle of doing them by hand. If this will allow you to pick images as frames, compile the decal, and put everything in the right place, then it'll be a winner.

Yeah its a good app dont get me wrong, its just that with only 16frames decals work best if they loop, its not a prob with explosions which can simply fade out. It would be Really cool if it output these.
Below is a quick and dirty method to make loops for decals.

layer 1
fade in--------------fade out
Frames 1-16

layer 2
fade out-------------fade in
frames 9-16----------frames 1-8

output to single layer.

I know, I know....some folks are never happy lol, nice work all the same.

I'm having a problem getting it to work with pictures.

I Select the pictures tab and then click Show & Add Pictures.
I add 16 pictures/frames to the list. There are no buttons/options at this point except to close the window.
I give the decal a name and click Create Decal.
It asks are you sure, I click yes.

It acts like it's creating it, and then after about 15 seconds throws an error.
