Im going to post on this again:
Most people here will reccomend whatever they use, its silly and not helpfull. As far as free programs go I would reccomend:
gMax
MayaPLE
Milkshape (not quite free)

If you have a bit of cash instead of wasting it on gamespace/truespace/3d canvas pro.. Get and educational license of either:

3dsmax
lightwave
maya (dont know if this one exists)

These are usually around $150 for a year. Thats pretty cheap and you can use something thats actually stable and well thought out. Educational licenses cant be used commercially but the odds of anyone here doing anything commercial are about 1000 to 1. 2:30 in the morning here and I wish I could have been more concise.

Indeed, I tried Gmax and Wings, but I coudnt get to grips with them at all. I find milkshape much easier. I guess it comes down to personal preference... just give the free ones a try see if you like any. If not try one of the cheaper packages (milkshape ) and see if you like that, it has a 30day trial version anyways, so you cant go wrong.

TrueSpace3.2 is good. What I've been trying to do is make my models in gmax since it allows for fine tuning, and then exporting them to .md3 with Tempest gamepack, then animating them in trueSpace3.2. But, right now we're investing in the new gameSpace deal.

One final thing, listen to RPGamer, download full versions or demos of all if not most of the programs listed here and try them out.

good luck,

Also if you want a good combo, maybe this may be a good choice if you can handle blowing $115

Buy Nendo for Modelling and Painting
http://www.izware.com/nendo/index.html

And Buy CharacterFX for Animation
http://www.insanesoftware.de/CharacterFX/index.htm

I'm going to buy the Nendo and Live Art combo pack as soon as I can scrape up the spare $130 for the disk version. The pack includes a pretty decent renderer and well...Nendo

Cheers,
Preston

Blender 3D is.the.best - Its features are totally awsome and if you have deep exploration or the free version before it, you can export from blender to .dxf and then in deep exploration export from dxf to .x and wala!! youve got it in your game.

The interface is a little hard to come to grasp wth at first, but if you read the excellent tutorial that comes with it, it all quickly becomes very kewl.

There is now an .X export script for Blender.

http://www.omariben.too.it/

I have not tested it since I gave up on Blender 3D a long time ago. But, if this is a decent export script, then Blender 3D may be the best free package available for making models for DBP.

Yes, as long as they export to .x, and most of them do. I wouldn't bother with Deep Exploration. Do an MSN search for "Essential Gmax Tools" click the first link, and download 3d Exploration. It's an older version of Deep Exploration, and it's free, the only downside it there are boxes that pop up telling you to register, but it still works without registering.
