THE FACILITY

This is my first try at a game, there's a whole plot to this which I'll state briefly. You play a solider that has to find out what happened at a secret government facility. Here's an obligatory screen shot:-

Of course all comments are welcome *braces self*

Here's the download: The Facility in rar format and is 63mb

Search for "HellHouse" in Showcase.

Just played your game. Great Job! I love the music and the lighting! The sound effects and falling objects were amazing! This game has great potential.

There was one door that needs some work. (see image)
and a poster that may require an "M" rating for this level. But my only real complaint is that I WANT TO PLAY MORE!

Nue B. or not Nue B. That is the question.

the level was nice. I would stick to videos until you have a solid level completed before releasing a playable zip file.

Thanks guys.

@RF - It was only to test the lighting on other peoples machine as a few friends have said that it's too dark and they could hardly see anyhting. I also wanted people to get the sense of suspense so they could experience the sound and effects for themselves.

@ Nue B - I think I'll blur "that poster" a bit

Was the lighting alright? Was it too dark? Too light? That's what I'm really concerned about.

I just tested it, lighting seemed pretty good,,although I would have the ability to turn lights on and off in certain rooms. I liked tha atmosphere and the use of trigger zones to drop carcasses from the hole in the cieling. Pretty good job so far.

Going to play the demo as it looks good . let me know if you want a hud for the game? Could make a nice one for you.
Over all the light was good. it was a little to dark in the office and the bathroom in the office.
But adding a little light would fix that.
I see you have the standard foot sounds. yuck.. if you want some better ones let me know and I'll hook you up.

This game looks great, the lights look fine to me. The music is also really good, did you make it yourself?
As for the poster, I think you should leave it as it is. It really bugs me that people don't say a word about violence and gore, but have a problem with a little nudity!
Anyway, this looks to be a great game.

@ Candle_: Better footsounds, yes please! I played Airslides first Doom fan game and the one annoying thing was the constant tinny footsteps. I haven't really thought about a hud yet but when I do I'll give you a shout Could you possible provide a screenshot so I can check brightness and contrast?

@ Muggins : The music while you're playing is mine, the loading screen and title page are not. As for the poster, it nothing different than what you'd find in many a newspaper, or on the internet, which is why I put it there.

Thanks for the comments Bloodeath

Quote: "Why was there porn just randomly on the wall?"

It wasn't 'randomly on the wall', it's supposed to be a 'man's workplace'. I think I'll turn it into a calender as that what it was supposed to be.

Quote: "The sink and hand dryer weren't on the wall, they were floating a couple inches away"

You're right! I even used the ENTER KEY placement to attach it to the walls which it obviously didn't do, I've now sorted that, thanks.

Quote: "I felt like i didn't know where i was going or why... I couldn't finish the level, because i couldn't find out if there were any enemy's or find the winzone."

As stated in the first post, it's only a test for lighting and speed, it's not a complete level, you just, well, basically wander around, no enemies or winzone.

Ahh, I think I've discovered a little buggette. The door was right on the bottom edge of the map, you obviously need a 1 segment gap between a door and the edge of the map. I tried rebuilding it again at the edge and this time the door disappeared completely! I've moved the door one segment in and it seems ok now.

Lightings fine.
I'll wait to talk about speed once theres more stuff in it. Being there will be alot more later to this game speed isn't an issue at this time. What was here ran fine on my machine as it should on anyones.

If i do remember correctly, there is another FPSC game under the name 'the facility'. It was a while ago when i saw it so it might have ended by now, i'll try and dig it up.

EDIT

The lighting was better in some areas than others, but over all it was fine. Make sure your players know that they can press the < and > keys to adjust the lighting. Also, Most games with low lighting just look bad when played during the day, but look awesome at night.

I've made a control config HUD that is displayed in my games when the Esc key is pressed. If you want, I'll let you have it for your games. (I'm at work now, so I can't send it till later)
You can see the HUD in my multi player game Prison Riot. (No hijack intended)

Nue B. or not Nue B. That is the question.

Aarrgghh!! That was basically the same idea I had! S.W.A.T team entering a facility, all other team members go missing, same name as well!!!!

Looks like I'm gonna have to change the name, anyone got a good game name?

I found a error. See the picture... I don't suppose that was supposed to happen...

How I did it?

1- Start the level;
2- Put the boxes in place to climb as high as the vent;
3- Press enter to open it (you might need to jump);
4- You get there.

Btw, I like the sounds...

You're right bdgbdg, I haven't finished that part yet I didn't think anyone would try and get in there, or even notice that you could. The game will be filled with many secret areas, I just didn't have time to finish that part.

I've rebuild the game from the ground up with better lighting (check out the screen shot) and I'm working on a few techniques I haven't heard mentioned in any other game:- Brain Flash, Body Drag, Creature Pass. I can't tell you what they are but they'll be cool if they work!

I'm definitely with you on that one Bloodeath. Showing how a level is mapped out can help others with their mapping skills, it was the wizard_of_id's Pointless Assault thread that showed me you could used curved walls to great effect.

And here's a trailer of the WIP.

Size - 16mb
Length - 3:42
File: The Facility Trailier

There is an issue with the sound when recording the vid, turn your sound down as it's rather loud! The sounds are ok in the actual game.

nice smooth trailer, i like the falling bones at the start. although, i think the rooms are a bit on the large side and has some long coridoors, however, the lighting i quite like. but a bit to dark in some places. and nearing the end of the vid, i think it was to dark. however again, if thats how you want it to be, then of course, its goods. keep it up

Thanks. The trailer is is slightly darker than the actual game, but I'll play around with the lighting some more. I actually want it quite dark as I want to give the impression that something could jump out of the darkness at any time (and who says it won't?)

Ok, I've just uploaded another vid of the WIP. It's 4 mins long and 20mb zipped in Windows Media Video (wmv) format.

C&C always welcome

Note: the sound is a bit overpowering, best turn it down a bit before playing the vid, this is FRAPS fault, not the game's. [/i]

Here's a reduced screeny:
