Multiplayer Setup [Router/Port Forwarding] Guide

Hosting your MP game with or without a router is not difficult, but missing a setting will cause it to fail. This guide should enable you to set up and host your games successfully. Keep in mind that your Firewall and Router are two, separate things. You have to set up your firewall to allow the FPSC game to function. And you also have to Forward the External IP ports to the Internal IP ports on your Router with Port Forwarding.

If you're hosting without a Router: Start the game, Enter your Name and choose to host. Your PC may give you a warning about Firewall settings. If so, enable the game in your firewall(s). Assuming your Firewall allows the game to proceed, it will connect to the FPScreator game host so that your game's unique ID can be broadcast to the rest of the world via the internet. Your friends now start the game and go to Join. Your game is now listed on the game host.

If you're hosting with a Router: First, double-click on the Local Area Connection icon in the taskbar to get to the Local Area Connection Staus screen. Click the Support tab and note the IP Address. This is your Internal IP address needed for forwarding. The IP Address here will be 192.168.1.XXX where XXX is a number such as 100. This will be the address you forward your port to in your router setup.

To learn how to do this for your router brand, go to www.portforward.com. In your router setup for port forwarding, enter the IP Address noted above (or the last 3 digits as in many cases). In the Port(s) or Port Range boxes of your setup, enter port 2303 and Protocol is UDP. Save the setup.

Now your computer is set up to be a host with a router. Before you host each game, check the Internal IP address to see if it has changed. If so, you will need to set up your router again for the new IP address. The internal IP address doesn't change often, but if you boot several computers on your network in a different order, the number may change to reflect this.

Start the game, Enter your Name and choose to host.

To Join any FPSC game, just click on Join.

"Waiting to Join . . ."

If you get "Waiting to Join" this is not necessarily a bug. When a MP game has ended, the broadcasted message on the FPSCreator game host server is not immediately released. This causes a "Ghost" game to be reported. Basically, the game just looks available when it is not. Another reason you may get the WTJ message is because the hosted game is on a router and not forwarded or not forwarded properly.

Correct, it uses a UDP port. Thanks for posting these tips, I am sure it will be very useful for users experiencing problems getting their multiplayer games working smoothly!

What should I enter in the 'Private Port' box?

Other than that are my settings correct?

You'll have to research your router's documentation to find out what a "private port" does. Have you tried putting 2303 there as well?

I just researched Belkin forwarding in general. In all cases, the "Private Port" is the same as the Inbound Port. So try 2303 there.

Well so far it looks right. You have to enter your Internal IP somewhere though or it won't work.

I have updated the first post to reflect this information. Thanks for bringing it up, Puppy.

Why did you put TCP? The protocol is UDP. Lee even confirmed this in a post. What number, port or address did you put in the box for Base HostPort?

Hmm...Not sure what else to tell you. This guide is definitive and your assistance from Verizon didn't help you. I can only guess that there is something still blocking your connection. Are you certain that the OS-based "Windows Firewall" is not active?

GOTH 1 SNIPER@ are you running the standard windows firewall or have a internet security suite that has a firewall and antivirus together ,if you are you need to create a rule to open UDP port 2303 also or FPSC won’t work , I had to do that along with port forwarding on my router also.

Heya, i have made a couple of multiplayer maps and have sent one to my friend to try out and for some reason he cannot play it, it won't even load up on his computer it loads perfectly fine on mine i can even host a map and all, but for some reason it won't work on someone elses computer, any ideas? he said it won't even load up

If you want to download it to try it out to see if it will load on your PC then you can either go to my website http://www.freewebs.com/fpsgames-bkinsman and click on downloads.

or it can be downloaded from rapidshare at:

@bkinsman: Your problem is outside the scope of this thread. But I will offer these suggestions for your friend:

1) Install latest Graphics Card drivers
2) Install latest DirectX

You have this same info on your website, so I'd assume you've already advised him of this?

yeah i did, he is someone who is quite up on computers anyways lol. i understand it is outside the scope of this thread and i apologise for that but as you are someone which seems to know a bit about Multiplayer Maps i thought i would post here to ask your opinion. lol.

One more thing, I don't need to do the whole thing that this post is about to my router first before other people can play them do i?

Darkfact would it be possible at all to download it for yourself and try it out for me, please?

Do you mean configure your router or configure your firewall? Either way, the answer is yes. Your firewall has to give permission to the FPSC game application to use ports. If you computer is connected to the internet via a router, even if it is the only PC on the router, you have to forward the traffic to your Internal IP address.

Just to let you know that i can load up the multiplayer maps and host them, so do i still need to do those steps to allow other people to play the game?

The other people don't have to set up for port forwarding, but they have to set up their firewall to allow the FPSC game to connect. Only the host has to forward the port and that is only if they're using a router.
