##This Week’s Theme##
Desolation

Whether it be from nuclear fallout, a zombie apocalypse, or an asteroid crashing into the Earth, the human population has been reduced to zero. Create a modern-day environment (or what remains of one), showing how the monuments of mankind stood against time two hundred and fifty years after the end of human civilization.

Quote: "Specific rule(s) for this competition:

-Your scene must take place in a modern-day setting.

-Your scene may take place either indoors or outdoors, but the theme of a world without people should be apparent just the same.

-Scenes DO NOT have to take place in a completely devastated environment as the result of nuclear fallout, etc. The extinction of all human life may have been caused by a viral disaster or otherwise in which cities and structures remained intact. Though do not forget to account for the two and a half centuries structures were left unmaintained—exposed to the elements and natural overgrowth."

I will try my best to get in on this one this time. It sounds quite difficult actually! But i love a good challenge! Great idea btw. And does it matter if it is daylight or nighttime?

Alright, here we go. This is my abandoned/destroyed city place in which i named New Haven. The name really isn't relevant, i just love that name! Tell me what you think guys!

BIGGER/BETTER/EDITED version attached, THIS IS NOT THE ONE BEING JUDGED! I JUST EDITED FOR FUN!

Also, the one in the actual post was original 1080p until i re-sized it in Photoshop. So the quality is pretty bad, so if you do want to see the full picture (not resized) just go to the attached picture and ignore the lens flare.

Thanks,
- Josh

@ rolfy

You do have a flair for this particular environment. You just set the bar.

@ Vent

Very nice. Gives that "desolate" felling at first glance.

Rolfy: Absolutely agree with you, and that's very generous of you to add a skybox pack to the winnings! (By the way, I just recently picked up your terrain/skybox pack a little over a week ago or so, and I must say very cool stuff my friend, too many ways it can be used heh.)

Back on track though! Great shot loler, sets a really good mood.

Edit: Oooh never mind I deduced it! Well, alas! There's my entry.

Looking great so far, guys.

@loler, remember, your screenshot is supposed to reflect a world 250 years without people. Not sure the gas/battery in that lantern would still be burning two and a half centuries later.

@rolfy, done. And thanks

Captain Coder, yup, that's snow. I tried to make a snowstorm. The date comes from when I finished it. It hasn't got anything to do with the scene.

Well, time to judge all these shiny entries!

Winner:

TheK.

Runner up:

Braden 713.

------------------------

Great job, everyone! Here's some criticism / opinion on the invidual screenshots.

@Rolfy: As always, great job on the custom media, the buildings really feel like they had to endure hundreds of years of rain, storm, etc., and are soon to collapse, since no people are there to do anything.
While the media is impressive and well done, the shot does miss some kind of emotion, right now it just doesn't have a distinctive feel to it.

@Exu Corporations: The screenshot isn't bad, but multiple details hurt the overall look.
For example:

1. The street doesn't end in front of the buildings.
2. Why is that one car's motor still on fire?
3. The buildings look way to clean and intact, considering it's 250 years after mankind.
4. The grass is flat, while normally it would have grown by a fair amount during those years, instead of looking like it was mowed some days ago.

@Vent: Nice idea, to use one of the world's famous and iconic buildings to show off the mankind's end.
While the Eiffel Tower is a nice 'eyecatcher' and makes the scene appealing, including other details would've made the picture even better.
Like a romantic sunset, with the sun directly behind the tower, or a foggy and raining day.

@The Zoq2: Technically, the mapping is well done, unfortuneately, it's lacking a detail that attracts the viewer's attention.
It feels a bit generic and like a, not so, important piece of a game.
Also, considering that the street turned into a dead end, due to piles of trash, the rest could / should be a bit more dirty as well.
Things like a buggy would've done a good job to dramatize the scene and make it more special.

@Braden 713: Great job! The scene feels dirty, lifeless, yet shows that it once was the complete opposite (wheelchair, car, bike).
Especially the way you've implemented the nature into the scene is nice - makes it clear that the nature already started to reclaim all the places that were 'occupied' by Mankind and every proof for their existence will fade away.

@loler: Nice job! Looks like a FPSC tribute to Fallout 3.

@Bugsy: Once again, the mapping is technically well done, but the scene itself feels a bit bland and it doesn't really show, that the mankind ceased to exist 2 1/2 centuries ago.
The idea to show a city from a roof has potential, but probably would've done even better, when not focusing only on the roof, but also on a street, that once was busy, but now only shows a few rundown and rusty cars.

@X Games: Tasty looking custom media, but unfortuneately, the scene looks a bit 'thrown together' in my eyes, it doesn't invoke much emotions.

@TheK: Powerful shot. The colourless environment and the heavy snowfall give a sense of loneliness and coldness, that really illustrates the end of mankind and how all the life has ceased to exist, leaving quiet and abandoned places, full of forgotten memories, behind.

@Northern: Cool, that you focussed on the nature and how it will soon overshadow buildings, and other human-made things, that were left behind.

Hello Doomster,

Firstly, congratulations to the winners of this competition Thek and Braden 713, very nice screenshot guys. Well done.

Also I want to congratulate Doomster on brilliant analysis of all screenshots of the participants of this competition, especially the analysis of Thek's screeshot. Very nice and accurate as well.

Thank you very much for you feedback (analysis).

All the best.

Great work guys, the screenshots keep getting better and better with each passing competition

And thanks for judging, Doomster.

@Thek, great screenshot, definately shows the time you invested in it. If you're interested in your prizes send me an email (address is in my profile) with the weapon of choice you want from EAI's GC Store account (EAI will be sending it to you). Also name the two choices you want from my GC Store account. You'll also need to get ahold of both Doomster and Rolfy for their listed prizes. I'll also need to know if you're interested in judging #4.

@Braden 713, I really liked your screenshot as well. Especially the way you made it so evident that nature was claiming mankind's structures. Send me an email with your choice of model/bundle from my GC Store account.

I REALLY wish I could do this, but I don't have any games that I can screenshot currently. Next time I will try to get in, my friends. (Even though I don't know you I shall still call you all friends. We all have the same interest, eh?)

Thek: Thanks man, that really does mean a lot coming from you!

Vental: I can't speak for everyone, but I'm pretty sure most of the entries are just scenes that are created on the spot, from the concept of the theme. Not actually from any game in progress. Which is kind of the magic about these sorts of competitions, small, one off projects to show yourself how creative you can get with a given guideline

Life would be much easier if I had the source code.

Do you have the free version? Because you can still craft scenes and take the screenshots in test mode. I've had the full version of FPSC for years but that's still all I've been doing, just running a test game and snapping the quick screenie; and again without trying to speak for everyone, I'd assume that's how most people do it. Quite simple.

Although, after all is said, I definitely recommend the program anyways, very fun to mess around with and create little maps and games.

Life would be much easier if I had the source code.
