here's code that uses memblocks to make an image rather than draw points. No speed gain at all. I dont like the changes they made with memblocks. Before 5.8, if I textured an object with an image then made a memblock from that image, any changes to the memblock would instantly be seen on the object's texture. Now I have to create a new image each time.
